Wipers

Featured Replies

I have another fault with the car! The front windscreen wipers have an intermittent fault (faulty when I drive it, not when it's at the garage being serviced). Normally on a cold start (and occasionally whilst running) the front wipers wont come on. It normally needs the ignition turned off and back on to get them working.

I have had a search on here, and the back wiper doesn't seem affected so I doubt that it's the re-occurring relay problem, and the wipers don't appear to be running any slower than normal (when they work) so is it likely to be the seized linkage? If it adds anything, when they are working there is sometimes a slight delay in them making their way across, after switching them on.

If it's a straight forward job I might try and repair it myself. From the description, the garage said that it was probably the motor that needed replacing, if it's that, I will look at getting hold of the part for him to fit (he's an excellent indy garage, but parts can sometimes be on the expensive side).

Changing the motor / linkage is a n easy DIY job, fwiw.

Initially I would suggest a relay - maybe 109, as they is know for strange quirks, otherwise maybe the motor.

If when you cycle the ignition to get the wipers to work, do you leave the wiper switch in the on position? (thus ruling out the switch)

Hi Dave

My son had a fault on his L&K but the wipers would not work at all, so poss not the same as your fault, but may be worth checking if they are partially sized, and as been said it is a easy job.

Cannot remember the whole process, but remove the wiper arms, and then the covers just below the windscreen, then undo the plug for the motor, then I think there is three bolts, and the

whole assembly will come out, pull the linkage off the motor, and replug the wires into the motor and test, if the motor runs ok, then it is the spindles for the arms, this is where it gets a bit tricky

you will see a "c" clip on each spindle, push this out, (don't loose it) and the spindle will drop out, if it does not it is sized, slowly ease it out, making sure you don't loose any spacing washers

and then clean up the moving surfaces and re grease, do this on both spindles, re-assemble and refit the motor link, and test, it should work ok, refit the car and should be ok !!

Could well be seized linkage. This happened to mine soon after I bought it, quickly remedied by deft cleaning/lubricating.
