Private Plate Help

Featured Replies

Hello all,

It seems that I may have managed to sell the Clio. It's currently on a private plate.

They are coming to pick it up on Saturday but say they don't mind about me having the plate. Is it possible to put the original plate back on the car? How long will this take to do? I presume I need to send the Tax disk and V5 off again?

What's best sell the car with the plate and buy it back off them for the next car?

Many thanks,

Rob.

If you want to put it on retention it will probably go on its original plate , its possible to do and takes a couple of weeks , unless you go to a licensing office direct , then its that day i think , check the dvla site rob

takes 30 working days but you need to send the v5 off so how can you sell it ??

if they take the car before the 30 days they automatically own the plate

p.s i know this as im doing it at the moment

At that short notice, id say dont bother, its a lot of hassle.

That said, you could arrange with them, to buy the registration off them, once they've got the V5 in their name.

Be very careful, for if they then change their minds after you have sold the car to them with the plate on it, they can tell you go whistle, as there is then no legal liability for them to give, or sell you they plate as they will claim it was part of the sale.

This happened to another forum member recently.

Rob, go to the local DVLA today and get it put on retention, explain the situation and ask if they can help with the transfer.

Just take everything with you, V5, MOT etc.

I tried that when my last car died, and i wanted to get my plate off it.

The DVLA office will take the plate off the car, but you still wont get the V5 back for 2 weeks. And i was told theres nothing i could do to sell it until i had the V5 back.

I have done this twice at the DVLA office at Chelmsford, and they did it on the day both times whilst I waited, and handed me the new V5.
