Very noisy tailgate closure

Featured Replies

The tail gate on our estate seems very noisy when closing, are they all like this or am I missing some rubber bumper type things (like my astra had) ?

Isn't when in the process of closing or when the tailgate latches shut?

If when in the process of closing perhaps your struts are knackered.

its when the tailgate catch engages with the part on the floor. Sounds very harsh and metallic. It closes nicely and smoothly right up to the point where the catch engages.

If I remember correctly, arent the rubber bumpers in the underside of the tail gate height adjustable?

same as mine - as it actually closes, it does so with a resounding 'thunk' that can (and does :) ) wake the neighbours

Same here. Sounds decidely cheap and nasty but assumed it was normal...

Mine closes with an impressive thump - or a bone-crushing one if SWMBO has let it (ie the hatch) drop.

Ouch...

Can i lend you a safety helmet Denis ? :D

Hi.

My vRS estate tailgate was set wrong at the factory, the bottom edge was fouling the grey/black trim on the top of the bumper, so bad that the red paint was chipped off back to the galv, leaving a red line on the bumper trim and making a real big noise.

Rather than wait 2 weeks for a warranty adjustment, I fixed it myself in 5 mins by adjusting the stop-blocks at the sides of the boot aperture. Fixed paintwork and covered edge with a black rubber edge-strip.

Tools required: 1 allen key, 3 cups tea, 2 fags.

I'm sure thats not the problem with mine, I had a look yesterday at the rubber bumpers and they both seem to be wound out as far as possible (one even came right outafter only a slight turn). The gas struts also seem to have loads of power in them.

I've found the best way to keep it quiet is to hold the tailgate all the way down until its nearly closed then let go.

Its going in to the dealer tomorrow anyway so I'll ask them to look at it for me I think.

Try adjusting these (see photo hopefully attached)......
