winter wheels/alloys

Featured Replies

Hi all,

well with the latest in topic being winter tyres, i was searching for some alloys or even steel wheels. i know mytyres sell packages but i was wondering what VW or audi OE alloys would fit a 2010 FL octy vRS?

thanks in advance

You want to be looking at any 16" 6.5J wheel from a recent (~2004+ so PCD 112 bolt layout) golf, leon, altea, octavia, A3, etc. Essentially anything that's 16", 6.5J width, PCD 112 fitment, offset of about ET50.

What's the difference between 6J & 6.5J and will it make a lot of difference?

I've found a set of 4 VW steelies for £120.

1/2 an inch narrower. Guess you could go down to 195 width tyres on the 6Js if you wanted.

I was thinking of getting some Nokian WR G2's, but not really sure what size/specification to go for, especially now as the prices are starting to drop.

thanks for the help mate, not sure wether to buy them now or wait till next year...but thanks again

205/55/R16 will fit on the 6J winter wheels sold by skoda.

You can not run snow chains on any other 16" skoda wheel on the Octy II

£50,000 says you can

You might be able to, but skoda says don't because you could catch your brake lines or suspension etc on full lock or over bumps.

I've had this discussion and I know the documents say that 205/55/R16 running on 6J rims are the only ones suitable for chains are somewhere on here. (Magic62 posted them IIRC)

Ditto for the chain manufacturers and retailers.

I'm not doubting you did, but you possibly shouldn't run on normal chains with anything on the back edge of the wheel.

I'm just passing on what was said.

EDIT:

Here is that document:

I'm not going to use snow chains anyway, so not too worried about that, besides what's the chances of getting another BIG bucket full of snow now or next winter? :wonder:

The TUV thing is nuts though. I guess it must cater for crazillly big profile chains? The biggest wheel / tyre combo the Octy has been available with is 225/40/R18 on an 8J. A normal profile chain (like my cheapo RUD grips) on a 205/55/R16 tyre on a 6.5J rim can't be any closer to the suspension strut or the wheel arch than that.

RUD said don't use their chains (9mm or 14mm) on 6.5J when i pushed the question at a vendor.

Maybe it's something to do with a lose chain moving around and catching it. I'm not really sure and to be fair you can run spikes-spiders etc on the normal wheels anyway.

I guess it's just a case of don't go spending a lot of money on a set of 6.5J as you might as well pay a bit more and get 6J. If they are cheap then it's really your call there.

For someone not living in Germany who'll only be using chains occasionally, like one or two extreme days a year in the UK or an annual skiing trip, I'd say get either 6J or 6.5J, whichever you find going cheapest on ebay at the time you're looking to be honest. In my experience it works fine with loads of room to spare. If you want to be 100% by the book, get 6Js.

I'd like to share my experience (well, sort of) referring to the Italian situation (southern Piedmont, traditionally if not lately, a snowy area).

Having bought what is defined here an "unchainable" car/tire/wheel combination (O2 SW, 140 HP TDI, MY '05, 205/55R16 on alloy wheels), I was looking for chains which, in my view, are the only solution when the going gets rough.

Most chain suppliers consider only the tire size, not the wheel, to decide whether your car can be fitted with chains, so the answer is usually Yes. As both Skoda and TUV state, both have to be considered before deciding.

Then I came across Konig (an Italian product, despite it's name) of the Thule Group, which markets their K7 (7mm or .276" clearance standard) winter chains which fit my combination. They are slightly more expensive (€110) than the standard 9mm chains, but solve the problem and provide the best pulling power to the €.

I carry them in the trunk from November thru March, hoping never to need them - they'll become another item in my museum of obsolete snow chains.

Btw, in Italy the socks are not considered a legally adequate winter traction aid. Moreover, even if you have winter (M+S) tires on all wheels, the police may impose snow chains installation in heavy snowfall conditions before letting you proceed on certain roads. SUVs and Xovers are not exempt either.

Best regards to everyone.

I just got a set of 6.5J steelies off've Ebay for £1.70!!

Perfect for next winter - it will be consistently below 7 deg C up here as it always is, even if we don't get the same amount of snow.

Given that I have never driven to the Alps for a winter holiday and have no immediate plans to do so, I'll just take it on the chin and buy the slightly more expensive chains that work with 6.5Js if it ever comes to it. I've certainly saved enough on this purchase!

Just need to figure out how to get them and then try and get a set of 16" Skoda Branded clip-ons at non-dealer prices between now and October.....

Nice. Good ebaying sir.

well done, i didnt even see any steels on ebay :( lol

Now that I've got them, I'll let the secret out.

Do a pretty generic search, e.g. "Wheels 16" in the "Wheel Rims" section; you should then be able to set the other search criteria such as 5 stud, PCD 112 etc to see all the wheels available that might fit.

Also worth checking the "Wheels and Tyres" section too, but that doesn't seem to allow you to sort by PCD so you need to be a bit warier of what you're looking at e.g. Wheels for previous generation Octavia/Golf/Leon/A3 etc a no go. But you can sort to VAG brands only.

Oh, and being jammily lucky helps too!!

Niall

Has anybody noticed a fall in price in winter tyres yet and if so any pointers?

205/55 R16 94 V Nokian WR-G2 or Vredstein Wintrac Extreme

If there was a good offer I would buy them, I am storing the wheels anyway.

Could you get away with a 7Jx16 rim on a FL VRS? Seem to more of those on eBay than 6J or 6.5J. Tyre would still be 205/55/16 and I suppose rim would still be ET50. Any views?

As the std 18" Zeniths are 7.5" ET51, your 7" ET50 will fit. No chain use though emoticon-0145-shake.gif
