i have a VRS and the other week after a service the next morning there was a loud tapping sound from the engine but after about 10 mins it stopped and it has not done it again till tonight i am not getting any warning lights on it just sounds noisy and you can feel a pulsing from the air box any ideas what it might be?

Could be a faulty glow plug if it only does it from cold? The pulsing from the airbox is one of the symptoms of camshaft and tappet failure. Another possibility is they used the wrong oil, and the tappets (hydraulic lifters) are not being lubricated properly. Oil MUST be VW505.01 so check you srvice receipt.

a quick update this morning when i started it it was still making the loud tapping noise but after about 5 mins driving it stopped doing it but to be on the safe side i had a oil change done and it was fine until later today when my pupil had got out the car and i started it up it started tapping again but after another 5 mins it stopped and now it is running fine has anyone got a idea what it might be i have had no warning lights on and the power is still there any help would be gratefull

problem was a seized exhaust lifter so new camshaft lifters and bearings £600 all fitted and back up and running now that is on a 56 plate with 123000 miles on the clock
