Discs or Bearing Noise?

Featured Replies

Help please?

I have had a slight dronning noise the past week, comming from the front wheel area also car pulling slightly to the left.No vibration or tyre wear.

I changed rear discs and pads a month ago and noticed front discs looked shiny and thin so decided to wait for better weather to change them.

Anyway i checked for play in both front bearings and so far none, took calipers off to find pads thick but shiny on the pressure pad.I removed the discs and there is a fair wear and rust lip on both but on the left inside it looks as if the disc has worn more two thirds in.

New discs and pads ordered today.

Question-is the noise likely to be a wheel bearing or discs?

I would say wheel bearing probably as i've just had to have one done on mine. There was no movement in the bearing but a fair amount of noise. Also my discs are not in the best of order and due for changing but still no noise or vibration from them.

I hav never seen any play in my front bearings although they sound a bit fooked. I took off all my disks and ground the lips off the other weekend and popped them back on, just incase the noise was the "lip" dragging on the pads.

one way to get an indication of wheel bearing wear when there is no play when stationary,is to drive hard round a left hand bend, this has the effect of taking weight off the left wheel,if the noise stops or reduces, its the left hand bearing,if the noise increases, its probably the right, but do the same with a right hand bend to make sure.try it it worked for me.

Thanks all.

I did notice that on tight turning that there seemed to be very little noise and the noise i have been hearing is above 20mph.

Discs will be here tomorrow so will fit them and see if that has cured it-i have ordered a bearing anyway and if needed i will strip the offending side.

gently sway from left to right while driving, once the weight of the car comes of the knackered bearing the noise will quieten or stop and when you put weight on it it will still be there or get louder!

If the bearing is real bad, after turning the brake pedal will have more

travel than normal when you straighten up. This is caused by the caliper

piston getting forced back.
