oil addatives

Featured Replies

hi has anyone used any oil addatives to free a sticking hyy lifter on a vrs and if so did it work also where is a good place to get a cam kit from not a performance one as it is a driving school car many thanks richard

If the hydraulic lifter is stuck, it is probably starting to break up. Additives will do nothing. You will need a full top end rebuild.

Crankshaft, Crankshaft Shell Bearings (8) Set of crankshaft shell bearing cap bolts (8) Set of hydraulic lifters (8) Crankshaft oil seal (1)

The PD injector rockers will need adjusting (requires a dial gauge)

Best part of £1200 inclusive of labour.

This fault is quite common on PD150 engines, but rare on PD130 providing Vw505.01 oil has been used at every service.

what are the signs of a sticking hyy lifter?

how would you diagnose it?

Missing on one cylinder....

it sounds that it is missing on one cyilinder but not all the time! some days it wont do it then it will do it for about 5 mins then clear its self and not do it again for a few weeks then it happens again it does it when hot and cold as well it is usually running all day as i am a instructor so do about 800+ miles a week now if the lifter is breaking up would it not do it all the time? i have just had a oil change done as a precaution and it has always had vw505.01 spec oil in it at service and has been serviced every 10k when it is not sounding like it is missing it is running fine with no loss of power so i am stumped does any one know what else it might be or what to check as dont want to start ripping the cam shafts out if it is not them also do haynes do a book for the vrs? my engine code is BLT many thanks in advance

also do haynes do a book for the vrs? my engine code is BLT many thanks in advance

My Haynes book says it covers all of them except the 2.0 petrol and (IIRC) a 1.0 petrol. There are numerous references to the ASZ VRS engine (not sure how that differs to the BLT VRS engine, unless it's "just another code")..

Easiest thing is to whip the cam cover off and do a visual on the cam & lifters.. Definitely sounds like there's some wear in the top end..
