Millers additive

Featured Replies

Anyone used millers additives in their vrs? Does it make much difference?

Some folk swear by this, so I tried it in my old 1.9TDi. All it achieved was to make filling up a PITA whilst delivering no benefit whatsoever. And for that reason I never bought another bottle :giggle:

I used this in my first Passat estate and I would have to agree, it is a PITA. Open the filler cap, open the boot, get the Millers, squeeze the bottle, tip the bottle into the filler (hopefully some went in!) then fill the tank up. And I wasn't able to get any measurable improvement in fuel economy although I did sometimes think the car felt a bit quicker, but didn't buy any more after I'd used the first bottle.

I have also used the Tesco own-brand one shot bottles of additive. These are much cheaper and the long necked bottle makes it much easier to get all the additive into the tank. But I'd still struggle to say it actually gave a measurable benefit.

So, in hindsight, it was a total waste of money. A remap is a much better route to follow if you want measurable performance and economy gains!

and also costs 3000% more, lol

A remap only costs 3000% more if Millers actually works. If Millers doesn't actually give you any performance benefit then surely the price differential is irrelvant. A remap will absolutely, definitely, give you an extra 30-50bhp and most likely a small benefit in fuel economy. Over roughly 6000 miles when I used a bottle of MIllers in my car, the fuel economy was not significantly better or worse than before or after I stopped using it. I keep extremely detailed records of my mileage and fuel usage for tax purposes and, for me, MIllers didn't work.

Just bought a bottle to use. Going to give it ago and see what i think.

I think it's been said before, but It'll give similar results to a couple of "premium" tanks of fuel, the BP ultimate / Shell V-Power stuff.

My car was running a bit rough so I put some millers in, I normally run BP Ultimate and do find it gives gains (though some people would argue not enough to warrant the price) but I like the idea of the cleaning agents being added by BP as surely they'll know what works best with there fuels.

Anyway, I'd run a few tanks of cheap diesel over Christmas (1400 miles or so) and chucked the millers in as an attempt to clean any muck out (It was so rough I thought something more serious was up, my first cold winter with a diesel  ), but, TBH.. didn't really notice any improvement.. a few tanks of good stuff on and slightly warmer weather have returned my car to normality. I don't really credit the millers for it but perhaps if you always run supermarket Diesel then millers every other tank will keep things clean?

Edited by Rob.

I've used millers in the past with no discernable effect. I've had my car for 3 years and in that time used supermarket derv 99% of the time. Recently a Shell garage close to my work has actually been cheaper than the supermarket close to my home. For that reason I've switched to Shell (standard not v-power). The effect is 30-40 miles more from a tank, for the last 6 or so tanks.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I only bought it for it's cleaning proerties really. I don't think that a £5.99 bottle of "stuff" would make any difference.

Interesting results using the shell fuel!!

It significantly reduces the black smoke pouring out of my exhaust which is why I use it.

I do find a difference in throttle response also but my car is highly modified so this may be the reason for me feeling any benefit. Millers Ecomax is about £12.99 at Halfrauds so buy yourself some and make your own mind up. Best way IMHO

What have you bought? I've never seen Millers for less than £10. And usually it's £12.

Much like Mr Roll, I find it reduces smog and smooths out the throttle response, along with being slightly quieter and smoother during warm-up. Those are the reasons I continue to use it... any marginal increase in MPG is a bonus in my book.

For the record, when they re-branded it Ecomax they improved the bottle design so it's much improved and easier to use. In any case I just decant my required dose into a small bottle for each fill. So I rock upto the pump, get that out of the boot and throw it down the filler before re-fuelling. Adds 30 secs to the total time, if that. Some may deem that an unnecessary hassle, but that's their call, not mine :p

Cheers,

Steve

I've just started using Ecomax. It was a toss up between that and trying out some two stroke oil. I'm about 130 miles into the tank and sea of the pants dyno seems to suggest it pulls a bit better and I'd definitely agree that the throttle response seems improved. Not noticed any significant increase in MPG but 45 miles of the 130 was done with a nearly flat tyre so it's not really been a fair test on this tank.

You can also add Millers after you've filled, The way a diesel works it's circulated fairly quickly.

So fill up, Drive to home/work and add at your convenience.

No faffing about on the forecourt!

I'm dubious about that though.

U only stick in a tiny amount (40ml), and with such a small amount, I very much doubt that it would even get into the diesel tank, probably just sit somewhere in the neck of the filler and become wasted?!

It is a completely different consistency to diesel though....

To 'sit somewhere in the neck of the filler' it would surely have to have a higher viscosity than diesel??

Used to swear by the old diesel sport 4, however the new bottle with the ecomax has a stupid filler that is guaranteed to get the stuff all over your hands and the outside of the bottle.

It was a bit of faffing with the old bottle, but the new bottle is pants - dont think I'll continue using it. Might try the 2-stroke instead.

Never had that problem with the new bottle, i thought it was quite easy to use.

Agreed. Anyone interested in a Group Buy click the link in my signature and sign up

Strange from me too - I think the new bottle is about 10x easier than the old one
