DrayTek 2820Vn

Featured Replies

I know a few people have run this router on here, so thoughts would be good, especially from anyone running on BE/O2.

Currently got a 2800VG and will have another play and check the latest updates to see if it actually does work on BE.

My main concerns at the moment are:

-How stable is the wireless

-How stable is the DSL line/ Modem in general

-How well do the security, QoS, and firewall settings work.

-Does it support IPv6 networks internally?

We use the Draytek 2820 without wireless for homeworkers and linking sites together for VoIP, it's the best mid range router we've found. We used the previous incarnation without problems also.

Requires hardly any reboots compared to the DLink, Netgear and Zyxel products we have used in the past.

PoS to be honest... we had them on 2000+ remote sites connected via ADSL, a lot needed daily reboots.

We've moved to Linksys now, with no where near as much trouble!

My brother uses a 2820 on o2, and is fine. I have just given up with my Vigor 2800VG as it was becoming more and more annoying. Got a cisco jobbie which seems to be much happier (thanks to those who helped me get it running). I find the wireless on my 2800 was poor, kept dropping out even down on b.

I have a 2820n running on BE, and its the best thing since sliced bread!..

bit of a fuss to setup the WAN first time round due to my lack of adsl knowledge and BE giving my static IP out to someone else. but apart from that its rock solid.. router uptime is well into the thousand-hour.. and several hundred hours of ADSL uptime.

the wireless is very good.. the best ive ever come across. only issue ive had was contention on a channel nerfing my upload link speed, changing to a high channel solved this.

Cant really comment much on the other settings, etc they are all very configurable, also the router supports up to 4 vlans/SSIDs for wireless, i use one with WPA2 for internal and WEP one for the DS that is internet only. apart from that i just switch on UPNP and let that handle the port forwarding..

I belive the 2800 series routers do have problems on O2/BE due to the line profile... as far as i know you have to phone the ISP and get them to change the line profile to get the 2800 to work.

If you need any screenshots of some of the config options, let me know and ill sort it when i get home.

I did try the 2800VG but I guess could be interested in the 2820 if the money was right.

I used the 2800VG on an DSL line this weekend and am remembering just how bad the BeBox is.

Where is a good place to buy a 2820vn from these days?

i got mine from broadbandstuff.co.uk around a year ago.. it was only £110 back then!. but considering its got adsl/cable/3g itll be useful until the day it dies

Which one are you running Col?

£110 would be nice as it's closer to £190 these days for the VN

Mines just the 2820n - dont see the point of a voip interface

Have a relative outside the UK, so was thinking of setting up SIPgate etc.

The 2820n is only £15 cheaper ... grr etc.

As i said above.. its a hard price to justify.. but after trying numerous routers.. bebox, 3com, netgear 834gt all of which have been flakey in one way or another.. usually wireless.. this has been by far the best.. i even tried bridging the netgear with it to gain the extra speed the netgear can wring from a adsl line, but in the end it just wasnt stable. i suppose theres the 2710 routers which will be cheaper, but i guess you loose all the advanced vpn and loadbalancing/failover functions

Was going to say that the 2710N seemed to be bang on budget, but might not be quite suitable as Col says...

I've seen the 2710, but to be fair would miss some of the control features coming from a 2800vg and ZyXel 662HW.

The BeBox is awful and the 2710 will be a step up, but i do feel the control is missing.

The ability to have a wireless VLAN on WPA2 and another rate limited, internet only, firewalled to death on WEP for phones/DS sounds like a good idea to me.

I thought it might not give what you wanted :)

I do like the separate wireless control elements too, and have been eyeing up a 2820N for some time; this whole discussion might just push me over the edge :)

Mark... whats your specific problem with the BEbox?.. crashes/reboots?

Its a common issue for them to have limp power-supplies that cause this... a cheap generic one from maplins usually sorts it..

failing that get a netgear dg834gt from ebay for under a tenner (sky router), stick dgteam firmware on it and they are quite powerful.

Yeah that's one problem, another is that you just don't have proper control of the network.

Can you confirm that the 2820n can run two seperate WLan SSID's one with WPA2 and one on a seperate VLAN and locked down on WEP?

That would solve an issue I have with phones etc.

Another issue is that a housemate is warezing it up 24/7 and killing anything else. The bebox can't even throttle them and short of booting them off I can't do owt without turning the openBSD box on and being clever with that.

The draytek can do throttling, either on throuput or number of connections (this i have used in the past to nerf my bro from stealing all the bandwidth by limiting number of open tcp connections on bittorent) it also has a firewall/content restriction module.. have read somewhere its like a cut-down websense.

Ill do a couple of screenys of the QoS and ssid/vlan settings tonight for ya.

Yeah the 2800 could do it too and worked a treat on Xen, but then I moved to BE

if the 2800 still does everything you want, id just get hold of a cheap netgear and plumb that into the cable-uplink port on the 2800. (or even the be-box.. im sure ive seen a guide on the BEforums on how to do this)

Would be interested in confirmation of this as well Col

The 2800 does not have a WAN uplock style socket on it, where as the 2820 does...

I'm running the Vigor 2710Vn and its by far the best router i've had.

There is a tickbox though to make the modem just do PPPoA to PPPoE bridge mode and I am told that you can taking a PPPoE LAN connection or routing data from one of the 4 switch ports.

Either way it can't do the multiple SSID's which is something that very much interests me.

Just to confirm the 2820 will do multi SSIDs with separate security, scheduling, rate limiting per ssid, QaS and mac filtering and lots of other stuff ive not looked at..

Couple of screenshots... let me know if theres anything specific you want to see
