Sky HD

Featured Replies

Morning all :)

I have just had a sky HD box installed. My picture on ther non HD channels dosent look as good as it did before when i had a normal sky box and the HD channels arent all at!! I have tried changing the tv settings......is there a fix for this or would a upgrade to a full HD tv be better? At the mo i have a HD ready Sony bravia.

Cheers

The SD picture quality is the same, if not better on the HD box as its digitally connected to the TV. Whats happening is that you are now seeing picture imperfections which were previously hidden by the poor image quality that a RGB analogue connected sky box hides quiet well.

Ah thats a bit cheeky!!.....So is there any point spending more money on a full HD tv? Or would i just be getting the same pic quality?

What do you mean by aren't all at? You do realise that HD channels don't always broadcast HD programmes and you may have caught one in an SD mode.

Also, even though you should have been connected on HDMI, were you actually watching the TV on the HDMI input (just checking the basics) :smirk:

Remember that 5.1 sound must come from the optical output (and needs to go to an AV amp) as the Sky hdmi doesn't support full surround sound.

They do also say that you'd be hard pushed to tell the (HD) difference at 32" and you really need 37" or ideally 40"+ to notice the benefits.

No doubt you'll just need to convince SWMBO now :giggle:

I can definitely see the different between SD and 720p on my 32"

not all that means...not that good really!!....was kinda hoping it mighta looked liked my bluray does....but sadly no! I checked to see if the programs i was watching were in HD, there were, but it still didnt look as good as i had hoped. And to cap it all my standard channels look even worse!!...well if it has to be a 37" then its all good...no swmbo to ask :)......its just a case of where i can put it!!

The picture quality of HD does tend to vary a lot on Sky (just like the quality of normal SD varies).

I tend to find Sky1 very good, Sky Premier, and national geographic best for quality.

sport is always a good indication - football/tennis on hd is briliant compared to sd (looks fuzzy)

also make sure your tv is set up properly as most tvs come set up to bright etc and this can have a big effect on picture quality - Digital Video Essentials - HD DVD/ DVD LCD TV setup is good - heavy going but the basics are good - you do need a blu ray player to set it up.

Well it seems to have improved no end!! :) I went to check all the cables at the back of tv and sky box and when i wiggled HDMI cable on the sky box the tv screen went blank and started flashing up 1080i for a few seconds then went back to picture which is now like it should be!!!....go figure me thinks!!...i would have thought that if the cable had been loose then i would have had no signal!!

Do you have a Scart cable connected?

If so bet HDMI wasn't connected and you had been watching via Scart.....
