Help car jerks when moving

Featured Replies

Ive got a feeling this is clutch related but i would like some advice.

For some reason today when i select a gear and press the throttle i hear a clunk and the car lurches. Sometimes it sounds like a bang, sort of from the front left wheel.

On the driveway if i take it out of gear and just rev the engine with the handbrake on, the car seems to want to pull forward.

Any advice?

Thanks

What about with the handbrake off? Does it move then? Sounds more like a gearbox problem than the clutch.

It does not move forward as in the wheels moving.

Just the car body seems to try and move forward.

I can drive it up the road and if i keep it at low revs its ok as soon as i go say above 2000 revs and change gear i get the nasty clonk and it feels like the gearbox/clutch will break altogether if i push it.

Does not sound nice.

After doing a search on any related problems i decided to check the engine...

If i move the engine back and forth it moves a long way, in fact i can move it 10-20 degrees both ways!

And a squeek coming front front right of engine bay...

Dual Mass Flywheel

I tried it again, my first thoughts on it being rev related were wrong.

Its only when the car is being pushed and with the movement in the engine it does seem to be more of a mount problem.

When rocking the engine back and forth it squeeks and theres so much play in engine movement it must be a mount.

Saying that im not an expert.. how would the flywheel be a cause if the engine moves about so much?

Thanks

It does sound like engine mount to me, the feeling of the car body moving when revving the car stationary points to that as the engine will rock due to torque reaction and the excessive movement will give an excessive reaction. 10 to 20 degrees movement sounds way too much, 5 degrees max more like it, especially where you say it squeeks when you rock it i would say that the rubber in the mount has either disintegrated or popped out, top mount would be the first one I look at.

Could be dogbone mount on the gearbox.

Sounds like an engine mount. A polo we had many years ago had similar symptoms, and I found the rear engine/box mount very loose.

Both my dogbone and gearbox side mount were sh*gged, used to clonk changing gear 1st-2nd-3rd and when accelerating or just taking your foot off the accelerator quickly. Was more of a wobbly clonk, sometimes 2-3 small clonks as it wobbled back and forth.

Before I had it done I put it in gear, handbrake off and pushed the car gently... engine moved rather excessively, as did the car in the opposite direction.

Try covering the dog bone mount rubber in silicone grease, it made the clonking much better on mine for a while which helped diagnose#

Oh, and by the way... after having it done the car felt MUCH tighter when accelerating and braking... it used to kinda wobble back and forth a bit when coming to a stop before I had it done, was rather strange

Dog bone/rear gearbox mount:

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/74250-changing-the-fabia-vrs-dogbone-mount/

Gearbox side engine mount is under the battery tray, so its battery out, tray out... possibly the air filter out for easier access. No idea how you replace it, need to support the engine somehow first.

Spot on!

Checked the car this morning, soon as i had removed the undertray i could see the dogbone had no bolt going through it!

Found the bolt in the undertray but no nut. Will get a new nut and refit, thanks all for your help :)

I will update regarding the mounts soon. Mechanic told me that flywheel looks good to him.

I just hope that they do not ask me to replace gear box or mechatronics unit. Really can't afford to pay for that.
