Heater has a mind of its own

Featured Replies

Ok - had this problem for a while now. The heater sometimes suddenly turns its self right up to the hottest setting - even if I have the dial on cool air! Sometimes it will sort itself out if you turn the fan off and open the window a little to vent the heat.

Could it be the heater dial/controller or is this something more serious??

thanks!

One of the following

Flap motor, EVAP temp sensor, Ambient temp sensor, heater control panel.

Flap motor is the most common.

****! Is it a big job?

I think my car as the same problem

Code scan first before you rip out half the dash.

Yes, definitely do a code scan first. I had mine done under warranty thank Christ, but the chap at Skoda said it's a bit of a dash rip out job, so make sure first.

I would think that if you had a fair knowledge of cars and you had the Haynes manual, it wouldn't be more than a day to do?

No idea about cost though?

Control panel replacement: part = GBP60 from scrappy + 60-90 minutes fitting

Evap temp sensor replacement: part = GBP30 from dealer + 60-90 minutes fitting

Flap motor replacement: part = GBP75 from dealer + 90-180 minutes fitting (follow same process as for control panel, plus extra steps described here)

Ambient temp sensor replacement: part = GBP??? (not had to do it myself) + 5-10 minutes fitting (it clips in behind the NSF foglamp surround)

HTH :p

My money's on flap motors, like Moggytech. If you're lucky, they'll just need resetting, which anyone with a full VAG-COM licence can do - so it might be worth seeing if any members near you have a copy...

Mine's been like that from new. Surely it's a function of the heater design? The heater will go on full heat until the set inside temperature is reached. I normally have mine set at 18-19 and when the heater first goes on it's very hot - then once the temperature in the car stabilises the heater temperature drops.

Not if it's set on 'cold' though, as the OP described...
