Rear Lower Wishbone Tool

Featured Replies

FYI,

I have two fabias both which require the lower rear bush replacing on both sides. Like some I wasn't really keen in attempting to get one fabricated. Therefore I went on a mission to get the tool.

The best price so far: £65 -> SEALEY VSE4781

Hope this helps.

Phil.

Well I used one of these 2 weeks ago to put 2 x SEAT bushes in to my VRS ,and whilst its easier than taking the subframe off ,it wasnt a strightforward job because the supplied part ( Sealey ) didnt fit without being modified

The outside diameter of the rear spacer didnt clear the housing and had to be ground away ,and the length of the spindle was to long so that didnt clear either

The quality of the parts really good ,with nice machining of the components ,but as we had to modify the items it wasnt a good solution ( my mate runs the garage and bought this for on-going Fabia repairs )

We talked to the Salesman who supplied the items and he was going to contact Sealey , oh and the instructions were rubbish as didnt show the method of building up the spacers for insertion / removal of bushes

now I think about it ,it didnt actually give the VRS model on the box , just said Skoda Fabia / Seat

I would not think that any models in the intended range should have caused a problem, it would be interesting to hear what the Sealey answer was, and if they agree with the instructions being not too good - Laser Tools would certainly have got back to you if it was their kit - do Laser Tools market an equivalent tool - I talked to them about this years ago and they sounded like they were interested if they thought that there was a ready market (which there should be from indie trade and DIYers, I'd reckon). I seem to remember seeing a demo video on-line from the guy that first tried to market this kit - but he either went bust or sold out to the big boys as his site is now "dead".

It appears they do, but when I was looking it was obvious it was a little too expensive for me: Laser Rear Wishbone Tool

Had been looking to do this myself before next MOT so finding the price very reasonable ( OK not in make your own washers etc. terms) I had a 'wee' look for a download of the instructions.

Thought they were fairly self explanatory - albeit not sure if the moulded rubber 'protrusions' are on the Seat bush. I do think however that a 'standard' bush or revised 'X' pattern bush would fit fine. Have a look and see what you think yourselves.

It appears that the Cupra Bush doesn't have the "bell" lip on the top which is required by the tool.. Interesting though, I recon I can use one of the "removal" disks in the kit to install it.

Ouch, still I seem to remember that the start-up company that first made a kit like that charged that sort of money - or slightly more - I'd trust this one more than the Sealey offering as it looks more up to the job - I'm guessing its made of harder stuff than the Sealey kit, so probably worth more - Sealey stuff like this is normally heavy made but "soft" - in my experience.

Mind you "pay peanuts and get monkeys" kind of springs to mind - I'm sure that the Laser Tools offering could earn its keep quite well and still be fit for use.

I'd think that while the Sealey tool with its cut outs etc will help you get the bush correctly orientated - with no guessing, using a felt tip marker on the Cupra bushes outer skin before applying assembling grease, would let you know if you were keeping the bush in the correct orientation as you pressed it in.

Well it appears that the Sealey tool isn't designed for the Cupra bushes. You can still use it but it requires an additional threaded bar and nut. The existing tool comes in two parts, one set of bits to remove and one set to insert. The removal part works fine. In order to use the tool to insert the bushes, the existing tool can be used to get the bush into the housing but then you need to get it from the front to the back. The insert tool will only get it to the front of the housing.

If you get a threaded bar that has a smaller diameter than the one that comes with the tool, you can use one of the removal pieces to insert and push the cupra bush into the right location. I'll take some photo's and post back...

Fully agree with pyromorph. !!

Fabia VRS 2005

Having had (both sides) complete consoles replaced, and had the old consoles/bushes, given back to me.

The outer part of the bush seems to be made of plastic, whereas pictures of the Cupra bushes are some type of metal.

I hack-sawed the rubber centre of old bush out, then, hack-sawed through the outer plastic bush.

Using a steel bar that had one end ground like a flat blade screwdriver, I drove it along the the outer edge of plastic bush and inner face of console housing.

It quickly collapsed, and within 5 minutes, it was completely removed.

I then cleaned the inner surface of console of goo used in its assembly.

I must say the console was held in a vice and I had unlimited access.

This said, it would have worked from beneath the car if it were supported up on ramps.

Fitting the bush was a doodle, with the use of the vice and piece of wood.

Ensuring bush was lined-up correctly, and the bevelled lip edge of standard bush was facing forward I simply squeezed bush into its housing.

From under the car in the future perhaps??

Having two flat thick plates approx 10m/m thick about 3 inches wide and 4 inches long, with a centre hole drilled to accomodate a 16m/m x 9 inch length of threaded bar and some flat washers, should also allow the bushes be refitted.

Now I am quoting from a guessability could-be-done view, not have done-it got the 'T' shirt view.

I intend in the near future to acquire the above and carry the guessability view, to make it a simple reality.
