7 day free insurance from Skoda

Featured Replies

I set up the free 7 day insurance ahead of picking up my car this coming Thursday.

Just a couple of quick q's for those of you who have taken this up too.

1) Can I just "pause" my existing insurance policy and have it pick up again on the new car when the 7 day expires?

2) Do you actually get anything through in the post? I know the dealer has received it through, ready for them to tax the car, just wondering if I'll get a copy through as well? I have visions of not being able to prove I'm insured....

Cheers

1) depends on your existing policy, but probably not worth it.

2) no, the dealer gives you a copy IIRC.

Cheers. Sorry for the dumb questions - I was just going to change my policy over to the new car from day of pickup as I've done with previous cars, but dealer said they needed me to get the cover to start the day before so they could get it taxed.

Hence I didn't fancy trying to get that sorted with my existing insurance company, just easier to go 7 days free cover.

But the dealer seemed to think I can still get my existing policy changed to the new car on the day of pickup - but I'd be insured twice then on the car, which doesn't seem like the best idea!

Be prepared for Skoda giving you the hard sell...I used it and spent the first few minutes of the call going through an insurance quote - not what I wanted at the time !

Ive used this and the SEAT system. Both very good. Dealer needs to have cover note to tax new car unless you take out a new policy on it. Certificates are car specific these day-didnt use to be.I had existing policy set to change at 12 midday on receipt of new car. If you are going some way to pick it up give yourself time to get there. Found I nearly didnt make it before 12 and my current insurance on the car I was selling and travelling in would have run out had I been late

Skoda do give you the hard sell but after all you are getting 7 days free insurance. Their quote for my new car was £100 more than I pay through my own insurance

Beware £500 excess for 7 days insurance

I phoned on a Friday afternoon, the phone conversation took 2 - 3 minutes, there was no 'hard sell' as such, but I expect they will send me a quote for my business nearer my policy's renewal date. The customer copy of the policy was with me on the Monday, and the dealer had his by then too. Quick, convenient, flexible in terms of allowing you a window to change your own policy.

BUT be aware, as Bill Blake points out, there is a clause under 'significant or unusual exclusions and limitations' where you will have to pay the first '£500 of any claim for accidental damage fire and theft fire theft or attempted theft.'

In addition, read the following extract under 'uninsured loss recovery and legal expenses' very carefully:

We will pay the costs of taking any legal action as a result of a road accident that was not your fault and which causes your death or bodily injury, damage to your car or damage to any personal property whilst in or on your car.

We will not cover:

- claims where you do not have a reasonable chance of winning

- costs we have not agreed to in writing

- any claim reported six months after the road accident

At any time before we agree that legal proceedings need to be issued, we will choose the legal representative. You can only choose the legal representative if we agree that legal proceedings need to be issued or if a conflict of interest arises.

The most we will pay for all claims arising out of any one road accident is £100,000.

You make your choices and you take your risks.

I've just done this and when I rang my insurer (Direct Line) they said that it was easier and cheaper to just arrange for the change over to take place as the Skoda insurance was running out - since stopping the insurance on my old car, pausing for 7 days and then essentially starting a new policy for the new car 7 days later would incur various penalties and admin costs. I asked if it mattered that I was therefore technically still insured for my old car for the 7 days even though I handed over in part-x on Saturday and the woman on the phone said that she didn't think it mattered. I guess, being technically insured to drive a car you no longer own is not the same as being liable (if, for example someone else causes an accident in it). The only thing I was warned about by the salesman at the Skoda garage was to avoid dual insurance (i.e. having two insurance policies for the same car and the same time) since if it came to making a claim they would each quibble about who should pay with each trying not to pay.

I got a pack through the post from Skoda Insurance a day or two after ringing to arrange it (which was 3 days before picking up the car). But when I arrived at the garage to pick up the car they had a copy there also in case I hadn't recieved my copy.

Regards,

Jon

I did this when I got my superb,

I sat on the phone for about 15mins before getting through to someone, had no hard sell at all. All arranged and I was off the phone 5 mins after speaking to someone. A couple of days later got an info pack in the post, and the dealer got the insurance certificate to tax the car with. The policy terms are run through with you on the phone anyway, including excess details etc.

I did ask them how much it would be for a full 12 month policy, and the cost was 3 times what I am paying with Bell.

Cheers all.

I have the 7 day free insurance set up and wasn't any hassle - didn't get any hard sell (you just have to make sure you choose the right option when you ring up to go through to the 7 day people, not the full blown quote people).

@jonjc - that was exactly what I was thinking, whether I should change my existing policy over when the 7 days runs out and just remain insured on my P/X car until then, or not.

1 day to go!

both me and my uncle used the 7 days free insurance.

1) I did not bother as I used the 7 day insurance just to make is easier for the dealer to tax the new car

2) Yes you do get paper work through the post do make sure it is correct as my uncle's had both names incorrectly printed. I recieved my paper work 2 weeks after the insurance expired

Be prepared for Skoda giving you the hard sell...

I didn't get the hard sell on the 7-day insurance call - actually very low pressure and quick and easy. But beware that when you go to pick up your car you may get hit by a moderately hard sell on 'Gap Insurance' ('you'd be stupid not to go for this' sort of thing - not the words he used but pretty much how he played it). I went along expecting only to pay the balance on my deposit and to get talked into another large payment took the shine off the moment of picking up my new toy. Actually I thought that the Gap Insurance was a reasonable idea and spread over 3 years not such a big pay out. I got the feeling that they were reeling me in a bit though and it would have been more honest to have told me about it when I placed my order so I could think about it and look into whether I could get it anywhere else - getting caught up in the moment and wanting to get on with driving it away I was a bit wrong-footed..
