SNOW JOKE! Yeti takes on EVO car of the year - the Lotus Evora!

Featured Replies

Sorry to sound boring but once again Im posting about the Yeti being in EVO magazine!!!

Again they take a 1.8TSi and this time, I kid you not.... they compare it to the Lotus Evora over a rather large eight page spread! I havent read all of it yet but it looks fantastic. B)

Some of the writing beggers belief imo for what is, essentialy a mainstream soft roader aimed at the average family!

"It does the junior SUV thing without the obnoxious image. It does the family MPV thing without being mumsy. It's a convincing all-wheel-drive soft roader that can tow up to 2000kg.

Most impressively it bubbles with the enthusiasm, chuckability and infectious spirit of a well executed hot hatch, yet deftly avoids the pitfull of trying too hard to be overtly sporty. It's this amazing versatility and bold execution that ensures it manages to feel 'right' so much of the time, and why we're such big fans"

Its issue 143 and I received mine through the door today.

High praise indeed it seems.

Wish I could afford a 1.8TSI Elegance :( Maybe I'll have yours off you in 18 months time Lee emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

You'r MAG or your YETI - Hahahaha - groan. Sorry, mate. Felt like it!

But well done for sharing that with us. It kinda sums up WHY people on this forum are so dotty about the YETI.

Yeh, the dealer delivered the thing through the front door this morning! Its currenty resting against the main staircase, smashed through the front room wall slightly, just able to peek at the TV with us for the evenings tele viewing! emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

Tom - it may be slightly modded in that time but I'll bear you in mind when I come to sell. emoticon-0105-wink.gifemoticon-0110-tongueout.gif

Hi praise indeed for the YETI then Lee. Imagine what they'll think when they drive a CR170.... emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

I agree entirely. I took mine for a run through the country lanes of the Ribble Valley and it really is that good.

I've said it before and I'll say it again...possibly the best all round car I've ever had.

Yes, they could then test it against the equally superior Lotus Evora TDi.

Looking good for us eh Lee...didn't buy our Yeti to be a Gti but looks like it could have hot (or maybe warm) hatch credentials. Will certainly surprise a few people!!

My other car is a 135 which on my way to work for example I sometimes feel is too hard and too powerful to enjoy because of the poor road surfaces so am looking forward to trying the Yeti with a little gusto!

Did I read someplace else Lee that it looks like the 1.8TSi may in fact have 180 bhp??

Only 2 more sleeps for me (well I should say us - its my partners car) - getting ours 3pm Monday!

Good luck for Monday - I still have three weeks to go.

And yes, the 1.8TSI seems to be shipping from the factory with 182-184bhp and 199-205lb/ft as standard :)

Keep us up to date with your initial impressions.

And be aware that the 1.8TSI seems to take a fair bit or mileage before it loosens up,certainly based on the ones I driven with various mileages on them. :)

Interesting - I'd be interested in any reference to the source of that info. Is it Yeti-specific or based on info for a different VW model that's also fitted with the same engine? What do you think the reason might be that Skoda are deliberately understating power output on that engine by 10-15% or so in the documentation. Or do you think that the same thing is being done with other engines too, like the diesel, where the CR170 might actually be a CR190 in practice, with Skoda/VW just giving themselves some extra margin if a batch of engines don't hit the higher power mark?

It does cross my mind that it might be risky to rely on getting 182-184bhp - there'd obviously be no comeback if you happened to get an example that gave say 158.

Saw this article today as my last subscription Evo magazine dropped through the letterbox. It's not really a head to head comparison with the Lotus (they make this clear in the article) it's an excuse to drive two cars in the snow/ice to see what happens. But I feel a bit sorry for Lotus as they spend most of the article talking about the Yeti :giggle:

They even like its looks saying it's "cool" and it makes the Nissan Cashcow (sic) look "even more pig like". On the road they liked the fact it was "happy to be chucked around like a hot hatch". The 1.8 is "smoothly effective" and although "pretty soulless" and "never emitting more than an inoffensive hum no matter how hard you cane it", they said "on the long drive here from the UK it was eerily quiet even at velocities that suggest its claimed top speed is pretty much on the money" (124mph).

Never expected to see a Yeti article in Evo, it won't persaude me to renew though, as 99% of pages in Evo relate to cars I will never be able to afford unless I win the lottery.

On a sort of related note, yesterday when enjoying some country driving and pressing on, my remapped vRS was reeled in very quickly by, of all things, a Passat estate. When he passed me at a roundabout I made a point of seeing what it was, a 1.8tsi, so these engines clearly are not slow!

Anyway - Evo is now officially a Yeti fan!

Hi,

this My link takes you to a post with an extract from the Yeti ElsaWin which indicates there are indeed two 1.8 TSI engines but the newer one is running at 112kW therefore it's gone down not up. Other interesting point unless it's as suggested in the authors article a typo, only EU-4 compliant.

Regards,

TP

Look at any independant results from vag dyno days. I take my figures from Dyno Dynamics rollers as I believe they are generally the most accurate.

I wouldnt be after any comeback and its not a 'risk' im taking. The standard factoy output is fairly irrelevant to me anyway but its nice to know its putting out some bonus figures from the start.

I seem to remember that the PD130 engine in the Fabia vRS in standard form produced quite a few more horses than that when dyno'd. Still can't see the point in a petrol engine when there is a CR170 available.... emoticon-0105-wink.gifemoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Yeah. but the NCAP logo would have given that away!

Look at any independant results from vag dyno days.

Sorry, but that doesn't really mean anything to me - well, I get the gist of it but I'm still not sure just where to look to read for myself.

But would I be correct in thinking that there are no specifically Yeti figures as yet - it's more a question of reading across from other VW models where a similar (but not necessarily identical) engine is fitted?

And what's not coming through to me is whether this extra power (over specification) is a particular characteristic of the 1.8TSi engine? Or is it actually something that's found with many engines. For instance, what are typical dyno results with the CR140 or CR170 engines?

I wouldnt be after any comeback and its not a 'risk' im taking.

You might not be taking a risk, but I would be! I'm already concerned that the Yeti - even the powerful variants - might have less performance than I'd really like, hence my interest in the power/performance data. Certainly the 1.8TSi Yeti that I test drove was less than impressive, but it was relatively new. So the true power figures would help put this drive into perspective.

And of course the 'no comeback' comment was rheotorical.
