Knocking Sound...

Featured Replies

Car is a 4 day old vRS with 200 miles. Noticed this morning a faint knocking when I pulled up at my kids' nursery (having just scraped the car's chin pulling onto the drive GAH!) Hard to describe... Bit like a lower pitched tappet knocking sound, about 1/8 second intervals maybe. Didn't appear to increase (much) in speed as I increased engine rpm...

New car, I'm probably just being paranoid...

Regards,

Mark

Hi Mark,

if it's a constant tick, tick, tick etc then mine does this and I think pretty much every RS does it. Nothing to worry about. There's a thread somewhere about it; can't remember what it was though.

Cheers.

Adrian.

Hi Mark,

Not sure if this will be of use to you, on my car there is a 'ticking' noise coming from an exhaust recirculation valve which is just above the washer bottle.Pop the bonnet and have a listen in that area to determine whether thats where its coming from. I had this replaced by my dealer under warranty but the noise still comes from it so asked on here and on the Vortex site and apparently its 'normal' (whatever that may mean!).

Cheers

Hmmmm....

Popped the bonnet and it sounds like a swiss watch factory under there. I suppose it *could* be one of these ticking/clicking noises being muted and sounding like faint knocking from the cockpit.

It's not consistent. Last night I got kind of a wheel-of-fortune in reverse (slow then speeding up, if you know what I mean) ticking/knocking a couple of times. It's pretty quiet, though.

What *isn't* quiet is the big knock I sometimes get that sounds like it's from the front suspension when turning and pulling away simultaneously e.g. pulling out of a driveway. I've also experienced a couple of nasty scraping "graunching" sounds which only seem to happen on the first significant turn of the wheel when driving off. Thought I'd kerbed a wheel yesterday because of it...

Oh well, 1000 mile courtesy check up soon enough...

Regards,

Mark

knock when turning and pulling away will be the front wheel bearings as they are double raced bearings and will knock when first driving away because they have sat in same position making them dry when turned a few times grease lubricates them.

Thanks.

Would that also explain the scraping (for want of a better descriptive word) type noise that I sometimes get, too? Once again usually when the car has been sat for a bit - maybe only a half hour.

Thanks for you help,

Mark
