An italian tuneup question?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I usually change gear about 2k-3k revs and seldom boot it in 6th gear. But have heard that occasionally its good to change up later and sometimes stay in 3rd,4th or 5th gear upto 4-5k revs on the vrs. Doing this will help burn off some soot and clear the vains?

is there any merit in this? or is it bad practice because it damages the gears?

Plenty of truth in it. High revs increases EGT (exhaust gas temperature) which burns off soot in the turbo nicely. Worth taking it to redline now and then, in a low gear of course to avoid the speeding ticket

I've done just this for the last few nights on my way home from work at 3am - I come off a 30mph limit country road onto a roundabout and then straight onto the motorway - kept it in third coming off the roundabout then put my foot down and redlined it along the slip road onto the motorway and then did the same in 4th and then changed up to 6th and settled back with the cruise on for the 16 mile drive home! Nice!
