its a basic law of engineering that as complexity increases, realibility decreases.

so how do you explain modern, vastly more complex, cars being way more reliable than cars from years gone by?

Say you have some parts with a reliability (within a give time/usage) of 90%. If you have 10 of those parts in series in a system then the reliability of the system falls to: 0.9^10 or 35%.

fine theory for 10 identical parts operating under the same conditions.

Its because modern materials, design and manufacturing techniques have improved reliability overall. But the argument I make holds true. I am comparing reliability of modern vehicles of varying complexity, not making a comparison against vehicles no longer in production.

I gave a simple example to make it easy to understand. The theory also holds for dissimilar components operating under dissimilar conditions. The reliability of a system is the product of the individual component reliabilities. This is very well established in reliability engineering and is borne out in practice in real systems.

something is telling me its the DMF not the transmission :wall: only thing thats making me think diffrent is like the wheel bearing droon on the over run grrr any ideas ?
