Car insurance using Confused.com

Featured Replies

I know I'm old, relative to many on here, but it does have it's benefits

Insurance renewal time is fast approaching, so I've been on Confused.com, stating all current and potential modifications, and got a quote of £276 through RAC insurance.

I have to say that's pretty damn good, so I don't think I'm going to look much further, unless anyone else can suggest an alternative

I have to say that's pretty damn excellent. I'm ten years older than you buddy, and RAC quoted a similar figure for my bog standard Roomy.

Maybe when I actually come to accept I'll find a catch :S

I got quotes from the RAC and Swift from Confused recently, but it turned out that Swift don't even cover modified cars. The RAC one was real at £290, so I phoned Chris Knott who I was with and they matched it so stayed put. The other problem I found after using Confused etc is the number of calls I got and cr*ppy emails, but I guess thats the price you pay

The only thing to check with these cheap quotes from confused dot com etc,is that you actually get the correct cover,a lot of them give you a quote with only social and domestic use which is no use if you use the car to travel to work.Be warned I know a few people who have had claims rejected for this reason.

Confused was good for me when getting quotes although im paying £600, slightly more than Brimma!!!

also be aware that a lot of these sites put in higher excesses normally voluntary without you filling it in, so make sure to check. some put £350 excess on top of the standard policy excess etc in order to give a 'lower' price.

Only £350? I had some quotes coming through with £3000 excess... They then phoned me a couple of days later to ask why I hadn't taken their cover even though their premium was the lowest on the comparison site...

The mind boggles

Have you checked your own company on confused -first thing I do on renewal day - sometimes they don't notice you're an existing customer and quote lower to give you "new customer " bonus .I take ref no ,phone them up and ask why - called haggling -usually works ,else I become another companies "new customer " - did try the "Official Skoda " insurer - yea ,well perhaps when I win the lottery .

But £276 - from memory that's on a Octavia - not bad ,I've had a renewal quote from Saga( so now you know my age range)- with breakdown it's about that ,on Fabia 1.4 Tdi -I don't think I'll be moving from my bank though .Thinking of your work, brimma -can't you get CSMA ?

I might try, but I think they'll struggle to get near the £276.

I'll update after renewal day to let you know what I went with

just checked my excess - £350 but at least my ncb is protected.

Gotta make sure i dont prang it!!

I have been with RAC for two years, they have now changed to insurance brokers. RAC quote £436 for renewal and stated on the form that the insurance was from Aviva. Went to Aviva for on line quote , £316 making it £120 cheaper than RAC brokers price.

Always worth a try - I'm with HSBC brokers - MMA insurance plus RAC cover - at home/breakdown/ get you there / onward travel - all for about 270 .So ,sometimes worth asking bank - HSBC have changed brokers , I always look on line first ,then go back with on line quote - don't forget as man on ad says "they're professionals -so you won't upset them " -just HAGGLE .

Confused isn't too bad although I have had problems in the past. Compare The Market though... when I went to accept my quote my mods had gone, my car was worth just £1400 and my annual mileage dropped to 5000 miles from 14000. By the time I had corrected everything the quote was rubbish. Seems they are more concerned with making annoying adverts...

I've had such bad experiences with confused.com. Firstly a quote from one company which they would not honour, even denying that they could have possibly quoted that figure on-line (I had the emails etc to prove it but what a waste of my time in the end - that was Royal Mail or Post Office insurance). Then picking the cheapest company which was Alliance & Leicester but not really them, they just fronted it the policy was all handled by a company in Colchester, ended that one early as they wanted ridiculous admin fees for basic things like me changing address!!! (So cheap quote is not always best), Worst of all, being continually badgered with emails I don't want and calls I never asked for. I'll never, ever use price comparison websites again, they win all the way, commission if you take out a policy, farming your details and selling them on if you don't. RANT OVER :giggle:

I used the meerkat one last time around and when I got to the stage of confirming, the price went up from the initial quote, so I abandoned it and went with my existing provider who hadn't put it up by much - £5.21 !

Never put a real phone number into a price comparison site, get the quote with the ficticious number and then amend the one you do decide to accept to the correct number. That way no annoying phone calls, just pick a number that is obviously dead.

Likewise for e mail addresses .Otherwise confused/compare etc swamp you with spam .Worst one is Kwak fit ins - ( followed by Saga -shows my age tho ) --I've now resorted to posting their stuff back in the enclosed envelope .Not to be outdone by National Tyres -I got some tyres in there about two years ago - still get junk mail from their branch .As a side issue - they're looking for business - they tried to persuade me that my front discs were excessively worn -that was two years ago , but unknown to them ,i mike them regularly . Shocked my MOT man this year -he issued advisory ,for me to tell him they were 20.5 , halfway between new at 22 and replacement at 19 mm.( after 55k miles).

Just to update - I've accepted the RAC quote of £338.01, bearing in mind that that also covers the following :-

Courtesy car

Legal cover

Uninsured driver's cover

£60 glass excess

Protected bonus

£250 excess

That's only a bit higher than the original quote, which didn't have the first three mentioned above.

It also covers the map, alloy wheels, tinted windows and suspension (if I get around to having it done).

I still think that's pretty damned good

Like you said mate, being old(ish) does have its benefits.......

......but I can't think of many others

i think comparison sites arnt that good tbh due to that when u get a quote through the website the price is different. tried this site tday for my insurance and its alot more that my renewal so i wont be using this asmuch.

What I do is get the lower figure through the comparison site then take it directly to the insurer.

I've done it for the last 3 years with E-sure never had a problem getting the lower figure.

It's worth looking at Quidco etc as well when you're doing insurance, you can get some reasonable amounts of money back.

Had I seen this thread before I'd have pointed out you could have got £70 cashback on this price via Quidco. This is the commission that would be typically paid to comparison sites like confused. Sorry if this has come a little late in the day.......

That's assuming the quote would have been the same in the first place :|
