RNS510 & iPhone - Bugs & Annoyances...

Featured Replies

Howdy Folks,

Just picked up my new DSG Elegance 170 the day after Paddy's day...great car.

I don't know what bluetooth kit they factory fit for IRL cars but it is compatible with the iPhone and most of the time works great but there a few things that annoy me and would be grateful of feedback from anyone who has found solutions.

1. No way of picking bluetooth user. I moved from a Mondeo to the Superb and the Mondeo had a menu where you could pick from a list of existing paired handsets. My Superb keeps picking the wifes iphone over mine, if we are both in the car together it is easy enough for her to turn off bluetooth on her phone and then it finds mine. What is a **** off is if she leaves her phone in the hall or kitchen with bluetooth on (and lets face it we should be able to leave it on), then I get into the car with my phone in my pocke the RNS510 actually chooses her phone and doesn't switch to mine until hers is out of range usually 200-300m down the road. Is there a menu anywhere on the RNS510 to allow you chose which paired bluetooth handset to use? For a device as hi tech as the RNS510 its bluetooth functionality appears to be a bit lacking.

2. How do I get the phone book to show FIRSTNAME LASTNAME and not the other way around? Having to call out "Dial Doe John" to the voice dialer is a joke.

3. Every now and again for absolutely no reason the iPhone disconnects, sometimes it will reconnect a few minutes later sometimes it won't. This evening on a packed motorway the phone disconnected and then I got a blast of digital white noise at full volume which nearly blew all our airdrums (i have the upgraded stereo option). Needless to say the disconnection issue is an annoyance and distraction but the white noise is dangerous as it takes your attention immediately off your driving, this is the 2nd time this has happened. The iPhone I have works perfectly in every other way and never disconnects with three other car kits (2 x Ford & 1 x Garmin). Is this a bug in the RNS510 and has anyone else had a blast of "white noise".

4. Had one issue of the RNS510 not turning on at all for 20 mins.

5. Can the RNS510 play AAC on the onboard HDD?

Regards,

GT

I have many of the same things you mention, they only happen with the I Phone, not with my Blackberry or the Nokia that is paired with the car.

re-enforces my opinion of the I Phone :

Great Toy, Cr*p Phone

Can't be the RNS then can it Bandit :) I have had 3 iPhones from the first gen and none of them have given me a problem with bluetooth kits. That's with THB / Parrot / and the OEM BT Kit I had fitted to the Octy vRS courtesy of Stu.

If you want to see crap bluetooth in action, try an N95 :)

Back on topic, VAG really need to do some kind of firmware update with the MFD3 / RNS510, for the price of the unit, these annoyances are a joke.
