Cost cutting?

Featured Replies

I have just noticed on My new Octavia Elegance. That there is no longer a cigarette lighter fitted into the 12v socket, just a dummy plug that looks like a cigarette lighter.

Yet another cost cutting measure? (ie no electric folding mirrors No spare wheel ,my last new Elegance came with a complimentary bottle of oil and screenwash) None in this one.

Good job no one in the family smokes.

Its just the standard non-smoker version.

But it does have ashtrays.

AFAIK ashtrays have a special "fire-proof" cartridge.

Smokers package (PKD) 25 Euro - includes cigarette lights and rear ashtray.

That's normal for most manufacturers now. The smokers package is an extra on most cars...

Add a USB socket, it is much more useful B)

Good. I don't want a cigarette lighter in my new car. I, nor my fiancée smokes.

I'd definately prefer a USB charger supplied in the socket, or even a torch like on the VW Toureg & Phaeton.

But to get nothing but a blanking plate, boo! i'd rather have the ability to make fire than nothing at all

I've got one of these. http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=267919

Fits the cupholder and you get 2 sockets and 2 USB points. Just needs a little snip-snip on the annoying LED's.

I have this too..Very good but too much coiled cable with it. I need to cut it somehow.

Any suggestions?

just order a torch from vw or audi they look cool!

Bond007 - Any pics of the torch? Or a part number? This'd be nice to have!

EDIT - Nevermind! Found it here!

looks like you could open the 12v plug and with a bit of soldering work make it much shorter.

Additionally - plastic on rear doors (upper part) was soft - i think - till the end of last year

Now it is the same as in yeti – hard and can be scratched

I do not believe that it has to do anything with cost cutting – if they use both type of plastic on production line, and need to produce two types I would say cost are the same or higher (actual volume decreased, production more “complex”)

I think, since that part of car had “better” material than in golf V, and now golf VI has finally also soft plastic in this part – it has more to do with market / segment differentiation

Well I like my octi rs, but if they going in that direction (no electric folding mirrors, no spare wheel, worse fabric inside), my next car for sure is not going to be Skoda, regardless of price or other good points …

you can have now kia with nice plastic inside and generally most Japans and Koreans are improving that part of cars and adding more stuff for the same price …

I have to agree, I'm currently driving a 06 Octavia Elegance with full leather, was in the showroom yesterday looking at the Superb Combi and the finish on the leather seats was shockingly poor compared to mine. I can live without folding mirrors etc but I couldn't live with a poorly finished interior. Its a real shame cos I really had my heart set on a Superb Combi 2 ltr CR. Might have to look around and see what else is out there now.

I touched on this some time ago on the forum as I have a 55 plate Octavia and it seems that since 2006, the quality of the interior parts has been degraded. Whether for market segmentation or cost cutting I don't know...maybe some of both. All I know is that certainly, on my car, the upper door caps adjacent to the glass is in the same soft touch slush moulded material as the upper part of the main dashboard (strangely enough, I compared to a similar year Golf Plus and it has harder material for the same part) and that the door armrest mouldings on my car have the soft touch rubberised surface as does the light switch - these all have now gone to a hard plastic surface on later cars which doesn't feel as good. However I think there may have been durability issues with this soft touch finish though - maybe that is why it's gone? Haven't had a chance to have a nosey around a Golf 6 - would be interested to see how that stacks up on the quality stakes. All I can say is that in my car, I like the soft touch finishes as it does give a more high quality finish. Gives you more of a feel good factor I suppose. I think of the Toyota Auris which has a hard plastic feel dashboard over it's predeccesor Corolla which had a soft touch slush moulded one...that was a retrograde step imho.
