Noisy Rattling Cooling Fan removed will my car overheat?

Featured Replies

This might sound like a no-brainer but I had a problem with the large cooling fan where it would shake the car when it cut in whilst idling.

I took it out yesterday to identify it and put everything back together without it in.

The fan is the larger of the two fans (to the left side of the vehicle) and I have read that this may only be for Air Con!

So does this mean that I can run the car without AirCon switched on without worry until my replacement part arrives?

(1998 1.9TDI Diesel Octavia Estate)

By the way for anybody reading this with a Haynes manual. You can get that fan and motor out without removing the radiator first as they suggest :p

I removed the battery & tray, front ducting assembly and engine top plastic cover to give more room and out it came after removing the 3 bracket screws.

Thanks in advance.

The larger of the two fans is for the radiator/engine cooling, smaller one for air conditioning.

Not sure about the cooling capabilities of the diesel engine in these, only experience of diesels I have is on Land Rovers where they run cool anyway and can be run without the cooling fan, I would think in your case that the engine would overheat.

Ok thanks for that - I wont push my luck then ;)

It will be ok to run it without the larger fan. Of course you need to keep moving around, don't get stuck in traffic / idle the engine. If you want to you can search for my older thread where I describe my octavia's larger fan failing.

Hi, Yes thats what I have been doing and restricted to only short journeys, trouble is they are at rush hour time when I take my wife to work so to keep moving I have to make longer detours lol.

Ok so far and the replacement part came today which I will fit tomorrow.

Engine just gets to normal temp by the time I get back home. :)

Cheers.

PS Great website for used part searching http://www.1stchoice.co.uk/

I got about 6 emails with prices from £38 to £70 to choose from.

My larger Fan spins whenever the aircon is switched on. My smaller fan has seized and has been like that for 2 years. My aircon works and the temp gauge never goes above halfway. Every time it goes into the dealers for a service or any other work they insist I need to have the small fan changed as it's the radiator cooling fan and the car will overheat. They refuse to believe me when I say it doesn't, it never has and that it didn't during an August Holiday drive to Barcelona in temperatures approaching 40 centigrade. I looked into getting one from a breakers, but they wanted £60 and I'm sure that if I changed it I'd find that the fan controller was knackered as well. If it ever becomes an issue I'll fit a Kenlowe fan in front of the rad.
