Adding music to iPhone from different computers?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I've just bought into the Apple utopian dream and acquired an iPhone, which is great, but there's something driving me mad. I can't upload tunes from my work iMac iTunes because the iPhone's synched with my home computer, so iTunes at work keeps telling me it'll wipe the files on the iPhone before it can add more tunes :S

I've looked at all the fixes using Hex Fiend etc and copying my home iTunes code to the iTunes Music Library.xml and the iTunes Library at work but it doesn't work.

I'm using iTunes 9 with a 16GB 3GS iPhone on OS 10.5 at work and OS 10.4 at home.

Can anyone help. PLEASE!!!!!

You can't do it. iPods will only sync with one computer at a time. You will need to add the music to your home library.

Officially yes, but I know there's a way around, whether it's through software, or just a hack.

All I want to do is add music to the iPhone while I'm at work because it's convenient. And I buy stuff that I download to work's iTunes but then can't put it on the phone without burning to disc and uploading at home. Why does Apple have this ridiculous set up? It's my music, paid for with my money, but I can't put it on my iPhone. Stupid :wall:

And another thing I've discovered is that the Bluetooth on the iPhone is useless. You can't sync with an old phone for instance, or even a bloody iMac. What's the point of that? You can't sync an Apple device with another Apple device. Grrrr…

Theres a setting to manually sync music i believe (there was with ipods/nanos)

When its connected to itunes, click on the iphone in the left window, then go for the music tab.

That said, im not sure how you'd sync your music purchased on the iphone, back to your computer.

I've not tried this trick with iTunes 9 but had it working with iTunes 8 (Windows Laptop from work and Mac Home machine) so maybe it's worth persevering along that route. IIRC it was a hex change in one file and everything worked... However, it may be easier to copy the tracks onto a USB disk between the two computers as if they are both authorised on your iTunes account the music should work fine.

Cheers for the replies but I've already tried the Hex change, with no success (I could be doing it wrong), and I don't understand the USB stick thing.

That still means I have to transfer new music to a USB at work, take it home, upload it to iTunes at home, before I can download to iPhone? If I buy something while at work I want to be able to listen to it on the way home but because Apple seems to have lock down on MY stuff, I can't. I have to take the new album home on a bloody stick. Progress, it ain't

The 'manually sync music' doesn't seem to work wth the iPhone, not on a different computer anyway. All the music on the iPhone under Devices is greyed out and I can't copy anything. If I apply 'manually sync music' it threatens to delete everything just to upload one friggin album.

Oh well, back to the drawing board :'(

This is what I did on iTunes 8, am happy to try it on iTunes 9 later if you like and see if it works for me...

Steve

Cheers Steve, that's exactly what I tried and nothing doing.

I think they must have fixed the 'scam' in iTunes 9 and on the iPhone 3GS.

I'll try again but not hopeful :(

Right basically I have done this on my old iPod.

Download this:

Copy Trans

Enable disk use on the iPhone and copy the .exe onto the iPhone. Its stanalone so it will just run straight from the iPhone.

Run it and sync the music you want etc.

Should work then when synced with the main iTunes PC should ask ti import the music from the iPhone to your PC.

Cheers. Doesn't work with Macs though :(

You also can't put the iphone into disk mode like you can on an ipod...

That's another thing that's been confusing me. There's loads about how you just need to set your iPhone/Pod as an external drive but I'm buggered if I can work out how. Looks like it's just iPods then? What a con. Why oh why does Apple torment me so :wonder:

Ok, downloaded and installed the latest version of iTunes onto my work laptop. I then made the hex change as described on that page and plugged the iphone into works laptop. It let's me add and delete music without wanting to wipe the iphone first. I know this is a MAC and a Windows PC but looks like the hack still works...

Steps below will hopefully help you. Computer A is your home Mac, and Computer B is your work Mac

On the Mac, both the files mentioned below reside in /Users/Steve/Music/iTunes where Steve is replaced with your username :)

Open up iTunes Music Library.xml with textedit on Computer A, find the Persistent ID. Take a note of this

Open up iTunes Music Library.xml with textedit on Computer B, find the persistent ID in this file, take a note of the value and replace it with the one from Computer A

Use a hex editor and open the iTunes Library file on Computer B. Perform a search for the persistent ID that was originally in the iTunes Library.xml file on Computer B (you did take a note of it when I told you to didn't you? Save the file

Open iTunes and connect the iPhone, ensure the Manually manage music and videos tick box is selected and with any luck Robert is your aunty's live in lover

If you're still struggling, PM me your email address and let's see if between us we can defy Apple tomorrow :-)

Thats the one draw back of the manual sync.

The first time you run it, it will delete everything. So you'll need to copy everything back from your library. Once done, you'll be able to copy music on and off quite happily from all your computers. It'll just never auto sync again, so its all down to your music management skills, to make sure you dont lose anything :)

Cheers Raglits. I've done all the above but it still wants to wipe the files. However…

… if this is correct then I might have to start from scratch. Does this sound right? Raglits seems to have avoided the 'erase files' stage but is that because he's on a PC?

We must defeat the Steve Jobsborg…

It's probably because I set up the manually manage music option on my main computer from day one...

When I installed itunes on the second computer last night it picked it up when I plugged the iPhone in... So it would appear that yes, you have to start from scratch on the one you want to be the main computer (I'm assuming you'l want that to be the home one)

For me, my home laptop is a Mac and I can't test with a second mac at the moment as I've lent my second macbook to a friend after their laptop was stolen...

Edit. I've just unticked the box that says select manage music and videos manually on my laptop and it says it'll wipe the iPhone and start again so yes, it would appear you have to start from scratch. There's probably a way round it if your phone is jailbroken, but we'll leave that for another day :)

I'd copy all of your music at work onto USB and take it home with you and put it onto your home machine this weekend. You can then change the setting to manual and with any luck from then on you'll be able to add music from either computer

Cheers matey. I'm going to give it a go now. Wish me luck :S

Well that was a waste of my time. Just wiped everything and had to put it all back on :(

Maybe it'll work back at home now the library IDs are the same

Oh well, you live and learn

Yeah, it would appear that changing that mode wipes it, but once set you should be ok... I set it to manual the day I got the iPhone when it was still empty as I don't trust software to "automagically" know what I want on the phone - especially as some of the iTunes library was my ex-SWMBOs and we have different tastes in music emoticon-0102-bigsmile.gif

I WILL find a way
