Will get some better pictures when all 4 wheels are complete :)

All comments and opinions welcome

Are they matt??

They look good but I prefer the shiny gloss appearance myself

They are semi, not matt, but not majorly glossy kind of in the middle!

Did I read somewhere you're doing them yourself? Look good either way, but even better if it's a DIY job!

No just masking tape and newspaper :) Yeah it is very time consuming, set out a whole week to get them done :)

Yes and no, when your up very close to the wheels you can see some minor imperfections where there has been a bit to much paint etc but spraying with rattle cans, well its quite hard to judge. Key is to prep and take your time. If you rush you will get it wrong, as mentioned above I set out a week to get them done working on two wheels at a time. But I managed it so I don't see why anyone else shouldn't be able to :)

Looking good :)

Cheers - from a distance as in the pictures they look fine. Might give it a go over the summer after uni's all done - have plenty of time then. Try and pick up a scrap wheel to practise on first. Thanks for the advice though. :)

Yeh to be fair its only if you get right up to them i.e within 20-30cm that you can see an odd rough bit but tbh when do you ever get that close to them :p

Thanks, currently have steelies on the front while im working on the other two wheels, need to lacquer them tomorrow and then leave to dry for 24hours so will fit them on saturday and take some photos of the whole car :)

I've been thinking about something like this on my spare foobared set.

I just wondered.. did ya use base coat? Have you used top coat.. and how many coats of colour per wheel have you done and how many cans of spray have you used in total for each wheel?

Last time I looked into this I worked out that if i was using Halfords finest it came in not much under the cost of a cheap refurb cuz I recon it's 4 cans per wheel at least?

Thanks

Rob :D

I used two cans of grey primer, one per two wheels, allowing approx 3 coats. £10

Used 3 cans of spray paint (Ford Graphite Grey Metallic) £18 allowing approx 4 coats per wheel.

And have used two cans of lacquer again giving approx 3 coats. £10

Probably could have put a few more coats of each on and it probably would have been better to do so but we'll see :) The two that are currently finished are plastered in wheel sealant now too :D

So £38 in paint etc, scotch pads and sandpaper came out at £6 meaning job done for £44, everywhere around here quoted £200 for the 4 wheels to be done so a £156 saving for me :)

Hope this helps!

  • 4 weeks later...

Mr Fox I just stumbled across this while looking for threads about DIY wheel refurbs.

I am inspired! :) For £10 a wheel i think i now have a plan for my spare set of Spiders!!

Couple of questions though:

  • Any links to the products you used or was it just a browse Halfords pick summin that right good affair?
  • Assume you sanded down the original finish then primed and resprayed?
  • Did you spray the entire wheel or just the visible faces?
