Isnt the Nexus 1 made by HTC anyway?

Yes it is!

Exactly the same hardware as the Desire apart from some of the styling and the buttons on the bottom.

I read today that HTC are doing some Beta testing with Froyo on the Desire and plan to have it out soon.

Phil

Isnt the Nexus 1 made by HTC anyway?

Yes.. but the desire has alot of HTC-custom skinning/apps to make up the functionality that android doesnt have. (which may prove a problem with things like exchange sync on upgrade) - when froyo comes out i think ill do the right thing and blat my phone to start from scratch...

You can tell im a Windows person... dont believe in in-place upgrades lol

Think I will do the same too. Just doesn't seem right installing such a major update over everything else and seems to make more sense to just start from fresh. Doesn't take long to get the phone back how you want it especially not with the backup/restore function.

Phil

Caught one of the lads at work with a Desire the other day and asked if i could have a brief play.

First impressions (bearing in mind I currently have a 16GB Iphone 3GS) were:

1. Build quality didn't feel quite the same. Rubberised back and a slightly more 'grabby' screen for want of a better description - not quite as smooth for flicking the finger over. Not quite as solid either as the iPhone has a single piece construction with the metal bezel round the screen, although this also means no getting at the battery...... Still, having had Nokia sliders which are all terrible, this didn't feel bad.

2. OS. Again, only had a very quick play but it felt quite cluttered but i get the feeling this was how he'd set up all his home screens, with lots of stuff running on them. I'm kind of used to the simple minimalism of the iPhone, although having said that just a sea of icons on the iPhone can hardly be called tidy. Folders are apparently coming in OS4 but that's all - no active widgets as such, just icons with push notifications.

3. Email. One of the biggies for me. Considering he was still on 2.1, the built in mail client with HTC sense could do Exchange security policies like pin numbers although I'm not sure how much else. But that's more than sufficient for me - it'll get me connected. 2.2 will sort the rest and that's apparently out in June - already out on the Nexus One.

Getting soooo tempted to order one and run it alongside the iPhone for now - the iPhone is brilliant for music and has some very handy apps but otherwise sucks as it's way too locked down. no bluetooth file transfer and even the lack of ability to tell when I took a photo or order photos by taken date etc (try viewing EXIF data on an iphone....pfft) is just plain annoying. Add on the crummy non existant GPS reception, poor phone signal in general, fiddly ringtones (iTunes has to be used), inability to change the MMS tone, no USB stick 'mode', etc etc etc - The only nice thing left about the iPhone ends up being the app store and even after they turfed out all the smut loads of them are still garbage and you end up going through about 6 before you find one that's half decent. The email client is pretty good and the on screen keyboard is ok but from what I've heard the Android one is easily as good, and the camera has a flash on the Desire. God I miss that.

So, the question is do I look into a Legend or spend the extra and get a Desire. The Legend looks lovely and I bet feels great being aluminium but the smaller screen and slower proc than the Desire kind of put me off. it wouldn't be much of an upgrade performance wise from the iPhone and has a smaller screen. Think it might have to be a Desire......now, where to buy one SIM free.....

What's the battery life like on the Desire? 1GhZ is a lot to pack into a phone....

expansys. I got my legend sim free from them.

They are a good supplier.

I actually ended up with a Sim free unlocked Desire from the Three shop. It seems they dealt with the shortage of Three branded ones by getting in a load of unlocked/unbranded ones.

In regards battery life. With moderate to heavy usage I am getting about a day and a half out of it. Generally more like a day with the ammount I use it but find it better than my G1.

Phil

I'm still undecided about this.

I love the silky smooth UI of the Iphone, however the camera is a bit naff, but I think that the battery life is reasonable, but am concerned about the connectivity of it to the cars HF kit, even though it's GSMII (well that's what I think Ben installed into it!)

I love the power of the HTC Desire & its smooth UI & better camera, however I'm quite concerned about the battery life & connectivity of it to the cars HF kit.

I don't know whether to wait for another few days to see what the formal announcement from Apple on the Iphone 4 brings.

Oh choices, choices. emoticon-0138-thinking.gif

There isnt anything new about the iphone 4 that hasnt been leaked. The OS has already been launched by Apple, so no real surprises to come.

Find a big CPW that does car installs, and get them to test compatibility with your car. Mine works fine with the works Ford system.

I usually get 2 days out of my Legend. But ATM it has 21% battery left and has been unplugged for 3d 15m 39s. Probably because my wifi usage has been lower than usual.

Well I took the plunge and ordered a Desire from Expansys on Tuesday. The iPhone has annoyed me just as much as it has pleased mesi ce getting it with the gps, limited Bluetooth and terrible picture gallery, all of which I use a lot. After reading that Android 2.1 supports the usual EAP stuff and then finding it can do Bluetooth file transfer (yaaay) and USB mass storage mode it was a no brained. To be honest I think I'll sell the iPhone and buy an iPod touch to keep access to the apps and still use it in my JBL dock.

I have a Parrot HF kit in the car and the iPhone worked seamlessly with that so I'm hoping the Desire will too. I found Symbian to be very iffy with the Parrot but apparently Winmo is fine and Parrot released a firmware update making them compatible with the HTC Hero so I'd have thought all subsequent devices would have been fine. Here's hoping.

Was looking at the Legend too but there was nowhere near enough of a price difference to warrant a 400mhz and RAM reduction and also a much smaller screen. I think you're paying for the whole aluminium thing. Lovely as it is the Desire was still the obvious choice.

Dont forget androidforums.com for any help you need.

It's a great forum, and like here very friendly.

Great to hear you went for the Desire in the end. You WONT be dissapointed!

The more I use my phone the more I love it!

Two things you will need me thinks. A screen protector- Search on ebay. I paid £1.99 for 6x very good quality fitted ones and also a case. I have found the soft "gel" cases to be the best. They are like a cross between rubber and plastic. Again ebay for around £2!

If you use iTunes for your music then I can recomend a piece of software that allows you to sync your itunes playlists to your Desire. It's called double twist:

Double Twist

Phil

That looks interesting - iTunes for Android. Worst thing I found about syncing music with everything before my iPhone was getting album art working - was a right PITA. Symbian was the worst by far. I assume DoubleTwist sorts all that out?

According to Parcel Farce it'll be with me on Monday.....woo hoo! New toy....we like new toys....

Someone at work tried talking me into getting the Nexus One instead but the Desire seems such a better option. Once it's all up and running with Sat Nav etc and all my tunes are on it (16GB SD card required me thinks) I can de-comission the iPhone and sell it. Will get an iPod touch for access to apps and to use in my speaker dock I think instead as some are really handy.

Anyone had a look at the HTC EVO 4G yet?

Im aware 4G isnt being taken up fully for a while yet but the phone does look impressive!

Got a HTC710 which has been pretty good for a winmobo but getting on now.

Decision time and as usual its a two horse race between Apple and HTC (Yawn)emoticon-0102-bigsmile.gif

Allready got an Itouch so you'd think the obvious choice would be Apple but methinks HTC with hemroid might be the ticket!emoticon-0100-smile.gif

Gonna have a gander!

That may well be a US market only phone, as it's currently only supported by the US Telecoms company Sprint.

Sorry to dissapoint but in the USA, Sprint (and also Verizon) use a different 3g standard than is used in the UK (they use CDMA, we use UMTS), so the EVO 4G would only work here on the 2G network. If you want a compatible 3G US phone you need to look at T-mobile and AT&T.

Technology wise, apart from the network differences, it is basically a HTC desire / Google nexus one. So you may be better off buying one of those two instead.

It's a US only phone to tackle the iphone head on, on home turf.

HTC have been asked by folk on http://androidforums.com, and HTC have zero plans on offering this outside the US for the foreseeable future.

Just had an advert on my HTC phone...via google....and .....I have now found out.....sex positions...there's an app for that :rofl::rofl:

I suppose you want that comment made a Sticky... emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

MY HTC Desire arrived today and I've inserted the sim card of my old phone into it but I want to erase all of the old numbers on the sim card, any ideas on how to do it? emoticon-0138-thinking.gif

Well guys after much surfing and asking around its the Desire!emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Reading your experiences and response to the dandy bit of kit has drawn me away from the Apple and having a removable battery clinched it!
