Does anyone know if the HTC Desire will work with the GSMII bluetooth system in an Octavia?

Ta!

Theres a thread on AVForums saying the desire isnt the best for carkits, although theres noone whos tried it on a VAG vehicle

it means you can have MSN messenger running in the back ground so you can play a game and still recieve MSN messages.

The iPhone cant multi task, infact its one of the requierments for any of the apps is that when the home button is pressed it closes the app.

well ebuddy, facebook etc all give messages even when closed? I don't get it....

They are push notifications rather than application multi-tasking... You still have to open the app involved to actually respond. It's a kludge, but it does work... Currently, the only apps that are authorised to run in the background are Apple apps (Mail, Safari, iPod etc.) although if you are prepared to jailbreak you can multitask on the iphone

I'm waiting til September to decide whether I stay with Apple or go Android... The iPhone 4 will have been out long enough for me to make my decision as where I work, the Exchange settings aren't too much of an issue, my iphone 3g works and that doesn't support the hardware encryption... (I'm guessing someone high up has a phone that can't support the full blown security so the rest of us plebs benefit emoticon-0102-bigsmile.gif )

Yep.. i used bejeeve and proswitcher to multitask.. its a royal PITA to have to switch apps every time someone sends a message.. annoyingly the OS4 faux-multitasking api's dont have any support for chat progs.. which probably means in true ghey-apple style, they are working on a i-chat app.

And for you raglits, a 3g wont support most of the fancy new features in OS4.. so heres apple starting to mothball phones that they still sell now... great eh!

ichat? Yay, I don't sepak to anyone on AOL or iChat so that's about as useful as a chocolate fireguard to me...

I know about the OS4 hardware limitations (I've already hit them anyway multitasking...), but as the phone will be the best part of 2 years old by September I'll get something nice new and shiny for phone use emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Have to admit, I'm thinking about turning the 3g into my mobile broadband dongle (it's already unlocked by O2 so my 3 sim should work in it...) just because I can emoticon-0102-bigsmile.gif

It's not Global exchange settings though is it, all you would need is an Activesync policy for the Android users separate to the policy that's used for the other users, that's a doddle for any exchange admin. K9 works really well, and I have my Desire syncing mail and calendar from Exchange 2007 and my Dev 2010 server (with the native HTC Client), with local encryption and remote wipe. Agreed though it's not as straight forward as it could be, but it can be achieved, it just depends how far you want to push it or how far into the market place you want to dig for apps. Wavesecure can handle remote tracking / wiping / security but they don't as far as I know do enterprise licensing.

No you're right, it's not just the global settings, but what I was referring to is an organisations willingness to allow a certain group of users to use a device that may not conform to all the policies and connect as opposed to the techs possibilities in 2007 (2003 was a single "global" EAS policy I think). That kind of global - sorry I worded it wrong in my post.

So with the K9 app (not seen it personally) does it modify the OS of the phone to allow things like encryption and a pin to unlock etc? I would've thought those things were quite low level - for example Symbian on Samsungs cannot use M4E so have to use things like RoadSync and that cannot conform to EAS policies so can't get in.

If only I'd have known about things like K9 when choosing my phone hence I got an iPhone. A Desire might still be on the cards...... (starts checking credit card balance..... :))

Ill have a play with K9 now.. but looking at the wiki its not very informative.

I cant see it encrypting data on the phone, although i believe the "core" components of android (ie internal memory) are encrypted anyway.

The reason M4E never worked on samsung phones is that nokia are stingy buggers and samsung are crap at software!. i had a sammy Innov8 at one point, good phone on paper, shockingly bad in reality.

Yes please do - we're in the process of implementing some EAS policies at work so any up to date info regarding Android support is always welcome. :)

I had a Samsung I8910 Omnia HD before the iPhone and whilst it was fast and the AMOLED screen was gorgeous the OS was horrendously outdated and with Samsung being who they are I had to change to an Italian firmware to get software updates at all and even then they were still naff. You could hack it so M4E would work (fooling Ovi store into thinking you were running a Nokia by changing the cert) but not much worked natively unless it was generic Symbian. Besides, only the Nokia E series supports EAS policies anyway I think - not sure about the N series, I keep reading conflicting info about that.

Having thought about it a little more I couldn't realistically get a new phone for a while anyway as I've invested so heavily in the iPhone with the TomTom car kit, numerous apps and a JBL Speaker dock all quite recently. Once those blanks are filled in to provide good sat nav and enhancement to the iPod side of things its very very good and as someone else mentioned seems to be a gap in the Android side of things, accessories. With the iPhone / iPod touch being such a fashion accessory for many the market for accessories is huge and with it being standardised hardware it's easy to make much varied stuff for the same device as the port is the same, in the same place, with the same software etc etc. Android seems to be quite varied in this regard with all the different types of hardware, different aspect ratios, software intricacies. This is one of the reasons Apple claims to keep everything locked down to such a degree, to keep standards set and supposedly quality high. The app store has also been cleaned up to remove all the smut (unfortunately - I wanted Gym Babes but it was removed by the time I got my phone :)) which has taken it from 100,000 apps, 90% of which was garbage to perhaps 50,000 apps (there was a LOT of cr4p) with about 20% rubbish which are just poor apps, not smut.

Same goes for the lack of Flash support - Steve Jobs claimed it's cos Flash as a framework tends to encourage badly written Flash apps by developers and as such they cannot guarantee the quality of the browsing experience with it running, that kind of thing. Whether people agree with that is debatable but I read a great many posts, even from Flash devs that agree that the quality of a lot of stuff out there is poor and it results in apps that are massively resource hungry and slow. Even Flash Lite is hit and miss as the amount of sites it doesn't work with is massive - all my Nokia's and Samsung etc had issues with a great many sites so it was almost pointless. So far on the iPhone I've only been hindered by the lack of it once when trying to browse the Yorkshire Wildlife Park website and that wouldn't work on my wifes Nokia X6 either and that runs Flash Lite 3.0. Aside from that the Safari browser on the iPhone is brilliant. I'd love to have a play with Googles offering on an Android phone. I've only had a brief play with a Hero but not enough to get a proper feel.

Coming from a mainly Nokia (and HTC WinMo) background I know that they do offer a great deal of functionality but most of it is truly naff - the picture browser in Nokia's has been rubbish and slow aside from the N95's which wasn't too bad, the Rootkit web browser is slow, clunky and buggy, the music players clunky and buggy (tried getting album art working?) email clients apalling, lack of apps (Ovi store is still poor and expensive and WinMo requires hours of Googling to find stuff) and cameras that don't live up to the hype. My N95's wasn't too bad but all subsequent ones have been a disappointment and HTC's cameras have always sucked a55 with dodgy colour representation and dodgy pink hues. From what I gather their Android phones are no better.

The iPhone, with all its 'wrapped up-ness' meant a pretty solid, if limited experience all round which has a great deal of room for improvement as so much is missing which I'm doubtful they'll ever add. I've since accepted that if you want to take pictures, buy a camera, so it leaves things like the apps, web browsing and email client experiences that would sway me to / from Android.

Just for Chrispy.

Android 2.2 (Froyo) has just been announced

And this is what will interest you:

500x_googleio39.jpg

Is this a free update for 2.1 users? I would love the ability to move apps easily to my SD card. Mind you, I guess with the HTC UI it will be a little while till they check how compatible 2.2 is anyway :(

N1 users will be the first to get it.. but expect a couple of months at least... although i will have probably rooted my phone by then anyway

annoyingly "gingerbread" is due in Q4.. rumour has it that might be android 3.0

Do you know if it installs on top of 2.1 or is it a full reinstall and so I’ll lose all my settings etc?

I think it will be a complete wipe job but not sure. I think with these updates the program is able to backup the phone settings first then restore at the end but not entirely sure.

I have ticked the box saying ‘back up messages and settings’ but I am not sure what is included in the settings? Hopefully it will be all my log-ins, email settings (non Google ones) and passwords. The ability to play Flash is nice, but I won’t lose sleep if I don’t get it, but being able to store Apps on the SD card will give me so much more flexibility.

But if you have the desire you can already play flash emoticon-0105-wink.gif

Must admit I don’t really have reason to watch anything on it. Had a quick play with it just now and you tube works wellemoticon-0148-yes.gif . I did fancy the iplayer app, but it seems to have been discontinued (waiting for 2.2?)

Found some more info on what is actually backed up on the phone with the option you found in the menu selected.

Theres a back up phone settings option? I have android 1.6 on my Dext, might only be an Android 2+ feature.

Yep! Afraid it is!

It seems the Apps on the SD card isn't going to be as straight forward as it sounds or seems. App developers will have to do something to the apps themselves and update them in order to allow you to put them on the SD card.

Still I imagine that once the feature comes out most devs will implement this into their apps.

I have heard rumours of 23rd June......

23rd june for what?? froyo on the desire?

Froyo is already being rolled out to N1's!

Yes for Froyo on the Desire. I know that it is already been rolled out on the N1 but this is HTC we're talking about! lol

We shall see. Looking forward to it anyway.
