Camera choice to make.

Featured Replies

As the thread says, I am going to have to make a choice on a new camera (ok..not "have to" just do)

At the moment, I have a Canon EOS 500N (with lenses and dedicated flash), a Zenith E, an Olympus MJU300 digi compact and the wife has a Canon compact. I am in the process of getting a better digi camera. Should I replace the current EOS with the EOS 300D? or should I keep the EOS 35mm and go for a Canon G6, and let the daughters have the MJU for messin about with?

I like the quality shots of the 35mm, but feel awkward with the bulk at times. However, I like the convienience of the MJU but not the picture quality.

Having said all this, the EOS 300D did feel very comfortable when I was looking at one last week, and its response times were excellent (something the MJU just doesnt have...ie press shutter and post letter to actually have the picture taken)

So thats a rough idea of my dilema.....any suggestions?

None of our photographic types have an opinion?

Andy.

What lenses do you have for the 500 ?

If they're genuine Canons, then the 300D would make sense as all Canon EF lenses are compatible.

If they're older Sigmas then they might work, or might need to be re-chipped, or may not work at all...

Likewise with the flash...

I'm planning to move to the 20D in the near future, but that's only because i need the extra speed. The 300D is an excellent camera :)

2 are Canon, 1 isnt...and I think its Sigma(been a long time since I played with it).

Main problem really with the EOS, is the size and the feeling of being a tit carrying it around all the time. However, I do like the feel of the 300D, but having read up on some reviews of the G6, its picture quality output and also size makes it a strong contender.

Never really had a problem carrying the 300D around, even with a large lens & battery grip attached...

And they're a bargain at the moment.

Cheers Geoff, I do love the feel of the EOS....but the only stuttering point is size and possible "do I want to carry that thing all day" questions.

Ah well...choices choices.

Without the grip attached, and with the 18-55 EF-S "kit lens" fitted, the 300D is actually quite a light camera, mainly due to the plastic body. Some hate the plastic feel, personally i find it's more a question of what you can do with it than what it's made from.

A lot of people also decry the quality of the 18-55, but i shot almost all my pics in Czech during august with that lens and i'm more than happy with them. (See below)

Also don't forget that due to the sensor on the 300D, the focal length of any attached lens is multiplied by a factor of 1.6x, thus making the 18-55 the same as a 28-80 or thereabouts on a 35mm film SLR ;)

Nice "snaps" Geoff ;)

Nice "snaps" Geoff ;)

It's impossible for even a ham-fisted snapper like me to make that country look bad :D
