new brakes

Featured Replies

Finally got around to installing the full set of disks and pads to my vRS. Bought the lot from Brakes Internation and they seem pretty good.

I knew the old ones were gubbed but the inside of the disks hwere way worse than I'd though and been reduced to only a 2cm thick band of silver metal to actually brake with. So, even after only 60 miles of driving, the new ones are terrifyingly sharp by comparison.

The only minor issue I'm having is that the new brakes tend to 'sntach' just as the car comes to a halt. Is this likely to be because the brakes simply haven't bedded in yet or is there any other likely cuase.

Cheers,

iep

The snatching could be a rear caliper binding issue. That's one of the symptoms I had.

Jack up each corner and give the wheel a spin to find out if or where the issue is.

Hi Bodge. What exactly is a binding issue? Is this simply where the pads 'stick' to the disc or are we talking about the pistons sticking and failing to retract properly?

Cheers,

For me it was the rear caliper siezing on. Possibly due to a stuck piston, or rubbish handbrake mech.

It bbq'd the pads, and boiled all it's green paint off!

Fix was to replace the caliper.

It might be as simple as the guide pins sticking though. They just pull out buy hand, so you can easily replace their boots and grease.

BTW, can't seem to access the vagcat parts catalogue today. Anyone else see this problem?

In case someone else has this info to hand though:

I noticed that the caliper retaining bolts on the bakc brakes of my octy were a bit rusted (the 8mm allen bolts, not the guide pin bolts). Got them off in the end but was a bit of a struggle. Thought I'd replace them this weekend before another winter of salt renders them unmoveable but con'r find the part number. Does anyone else know it?

I've not been able to get on to the catalogue for about a week now

Yep me too gave up over two weeks back trying to access the caterlog. Audi and VW forums say the same.

I had issues removing the rear bolts holding caplier bracket on too very tight and rusty. A careful spray of WD40 and a slow undo with a breaker bar got them in the end. I tend to tighten first to break any seizing.

Glad I also bought the wind back tool makes life much easier. Also lubricated the guide pins to make sure they were ok.

Here is a pic of the wind back tool in place

Vagcat has been down for at least a couple of weeks now, I think VAG has cottoned on an said remove it or be sued! Damned annoying because it is so useful. VAG ought to realise having it widely available saves customers and parts counter staff so much time!

Same for me :S
