engine raisers or shallow sump?

Featured Replies

have you go a picture of the retro fitted oil level sensor?

it would be nicne to see

I did have some pics on the new sump, but seem to have reset the counter on my camera and overwritten them

I would take some more, but don't have the car @ the mo as its being rebuilt.

I notice you're a fellow 4x4 owner. This make the Brazilian option a little more complex, as the shallow sump is for 2wheelers.

Due to the location of the transfer box, the ARX engine has a different sump to the normal configuration, with oil lines going to different places.

In order to fit the shallow sump, a custom pipe will need to fabricated (or rather re-fabricated) from the existing.

I'm afraid I can't be more detailed than this, as I didn't fit it !

I will probably have the shallow sump transferred onto my replacement engine, so will try to take a few photos then (week or so from now).

ah well im not going to be using the arx engine im going to be using a TT APX engine plus the 6 speed 02m box at some stage

i have had a good chat with sweedish about 4x4 stuff, and your ARB's ;)

I suspect all haldex 1.8 20v based VAG's will have the same sump oil line routing issues.

Off topic, but looking forward to getting these into my O2M

Very nice chap by the name of Garry Peloquin did me a bit of a deal

your car is going to be mental, whats your goals, budget, use etc etc

pm me so this doesnt go off topic to much :giggle:

how much of a bashing are you expecting it to get? Have you considered the route that SEAT Sport took with the Leon Supercopa, welding two thick aluminium stiffener plates to the bottom - that will take a fair bashing over curbs whilst racing. You will need to be a bit inventive or lose the oil sensor though.

Or how about this badboy from INA Engineering: B)

the INA one is nice :p

might be worth seeing what the tt boys are using on their cars to solve the problem of the 2wd sumps not fitting.

how low do you guys who are worried about sumps want to go?

We run a 2wd TT in a saloon racing championship - running it as low as we would want to without compromising the angles of driveshafts/bottom arms/steering arms, we don't have any problem chucking it over the curbs. Granted we are running the SEAT Sport reinforced sump, but with standard engine mount positions, and don't have any problems. We've had the odd scrape, but considering the speeds we are seeing over the curbs, there isn't any significant signs of regular contact.

Its' not race tracks that kill sumps, but real roads with pot holes, speed-humps, debris and "topographical" features.

Both my car and sweedish's are not insanely low.

I took my sump out on an unpaved track, and while in Italy recently, had to stop and check the underside of sweedish's car several times.

Luckily he'd only hit his lower strut brace.

There's some big curbs! ;)

Thinking about it, it's likely to be the difference in spring rates that's significant - road car rates will be much softer and allow more movement, which is where the problem lies I guess.

  • 2 weeks later...

the thing is how do you at what point the drive shafts and bottom arms etc are at a stress full angle until its too late?

i did my sump in late at night on a brand new speed bump that had no white paint markings on it saying that it was even there and the warning signs weren't mounted on their poles yet either.

some little fecker had knocked the temp road work signs over as well on closer inspection after i had dumped all the oil.
