Re-map issues?

Featured Replies

Hi there guys, I am new to the vRS scene! I am picking up my brand new vRS next week can't wait :D

I want to get it re-mapped however I have heard some nightmare stories about anti tuning software and people not being able to do it etc!

I have heard this is more common on the diesel models (the one im getting is petrol) and was just wondering if anyone has had it done recently and was it easy enough done etc??

Thanks, Steve

We tune the newest ECUs with anti-tuning software, so if you get stuck, you know where to come emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Thanks for that. Do you have to pull the ECU apart though? I have heard a few companies have to do this and I don't know (from a warranty point of view) whether this is viable to do to a brand new car :S

The ECU needs to be removed from the car yes, that is the only way to do it. However if you're worried about warranty, then you need to seriously consider whether you really want to remap your car, as there is no way to hide it with the newest ECUs like the one fitted to your new VRS.

no re-map can be hide from a dealer if they should choose to look. Saying that every dealer ship I've used with my fabia have known it was re-mapped and they have never turned me away when it comes to warrenty work.

Its worth sticking a few thousand miles on it before you map it, beds it in & ensures there are no glaring problems that need the dealers attention.

The remap will if the dealer chooses effect the warranty but most dealers I know of are sensible about it, they get paid for warranty work so why turn it away ??

Splitting the ECU shouldnt be a problem, Ive had it done on a Mk 1 octy & had no issues

Do some rersearch whilst your breaking the car in & make sure you go to a reputable tuner, there are a few on here & remember cheapest is not always the best.

Also tell your insurance company, it may effect the premium but better that than find a claim thrown out

Unless you're used to the car as it is and where the limits of its performance lie, you won't be able to judge whether the remap was worth it in the first place, so I'd give it a month or two at least. I'd also ask the garage about warranty work before remapping and declare anything done to the car to the insurance company. In my case the insurance premium didn't even change, and all that was required was for the guy who did the remap to send my insurer an email saying the car remained in roadworthy condition after the remap. If it wasn't done through a reputable tuning company and I wasn't able to show the rolling road data it might well have been a lot more difficult to keep the car insured though.

I already had a Bluefin from superchips from my previous MK2 Octavia VRS, so elected to pay the reset fee and stick it on my new TSI vrs (build week 4, 2010), and it remapped fine with the Superchips bluefin. Goes like a rocket now. Not sure if Shark's STS has done this though as I was thinking of an STS instead as I have read wonders on forums here about Ben. There is uncertainty about the ECU from a lot of people, but the guy I spoke with at Superchips told me they haven't come across on of these ECU's yet.

Hope this helps.

If I do hear from Shark's STS working on FL TSi's, I may go for one later, and stick the bluefin on the mrs's Touran.

The STS is compatible with the FL TSI engine

Yeah they said the same to me, I had a BMW diesel last year and had a bluefin for that and the difference was amazing! Iv sent the bluefin away to them so they can reprogram it for me. My car has been built for a while apparently, its been loaded with options so it hasnt sold so its been sitting in Germany! hopefully il strike lucky and the bluefin will work :)

Iv considered Revo as well but iv heard of their software causing flat spots and ruining the smoothness of the engine :S

Cool so its compatible? the STS is like a bluefin isnt it? I dont know if i'm being a bit dumb here but i thought the ECU has to be removed :S

You can read about STS here http://www.sharkperformance.co.uk/sts.asp

I've ordered mine for my upcoming Scout ;)

Which for me is the absolute no go.....nice to hear such honesty from someone who really does it and knows the facts.....

Mind you, I would never remap my car anyway, but that is another matter

It's pot luck whether your ECU will be protected or not. If it is, then nothing over OBD will work (Bluefin, STS or any other OBD flash). If it is protected, then you're stuck with an ECU out job. I've seen many more protected diesel ECUs as they introduced it on those first, and I have seen several brand new TSIs that haven't been protected, so you might well be ok!

Sorry I didn't mention that before, as you were asking about protection I assumed you knew the score and that it was down to luck which ECU you got

Honesty is the only policy at Shark Performance - I'd rather lose a sale to honesty than find that someone is in a position they didn't want to be in after carrying out

some work.

No thats fine mate, thanks for your help! Im hoping im lucky as my car hasnt just been built, its beein sitting in germany for a couple of months as it has a load of options fitted to it. I think someone has ordered it and then cancelled so its just sat there.

Fingers crossed that it doesn't have protection anyway :D

Shame there isn't a tell-tale sign that an ECU is protected by inspecting, perhaps looking for a serial number or something?

As has been previously mentioned put a couple of K miles on it to bed the car in and ensure there are no build issues.

Warranty work will only be void on the ECU. I have had Warranty work carried out on my MKII vRS 4 times now and each time the car has been obviously modified. It's only the part that you have altered that is not covered anymore. The warranty work has been done by 4 different dealers as well due to the nature of my job and i move about the country a lot.

Make sure you tell your insurance though as some won't insure for performance remaps. Adrian Flux & Chris Knott seem to be the best to go with (i'm with Adrian Flux).

Just beware once you start your on a slippery slope. I said i wouldn't go past a remap and im now on Stage 2+ and looking to go K04 Conversion

Hehe I know the feeling mate! I said when I got my s2000 that I wouldn't touch it and it ended up burning a hole in my pocket with mods! To be honest all I really want to do with the vRS is a map, panel filter and a subtle exhaust - most likely Milltek.

And I know about running it in first I'm just impatient and want everything at once

So that's your first trip to the Tuners then

Haha, most likely ;) I have already ordered the panel filter and I havn't even got the car yet! So how is your vRS then? Love it?

Yes. Absolute weapon but then i am at Stage 2+

Just don't be disappointed when you don't get the figures they quote on the RR for Stage 1. You will get (depending on who you choose) 235-240bhp and 270ish lb/ft.

The most i have seen from Stage 1 was 267bhp but that car had the same mods as mine on the Stage 1 File

My Car has the Following

REVO Stage 2+

Full Miltek Turbo Back Exhaust

Neuspeed Turbo Outlet Pipe

EVOMS Induction Kit

Autotech Fuel Pump

S3 Intercooler

Relocated DV

Whiteline Anti-Lift Kit

Eibach Front & Rear ARB

Eibach Springs

Koni FSD

10mm Spacers at the Front 15mm Spacers at the Rear

VF Torque Arm Insert

Sachs Clutch & Flywheel

I've got an R32 brake kit on the way too. All in all it's been a labour of love and even though i have spent a fair bit on the car i have loved every minute of it

The famous modding slippery slope

Just before I sold my Mk 1 4x4 I added up the bill, over twice what I paid for the car (bought as a pre reg) , scary but no regrets, had a lot of fun on the way

Ben is there a way to tell? I have a full version of VCDS if that would show something up?

Ideally i'd prefer to have your stage 1 map after seeing how smooth it came out on the rolling road. But you're miles away from me and STS would be the only sensible option, don't really want to pony up for one only to find it wont work :-(

Revo's solution is i remove the ECU and mail it to them.
