Measuring Sockets

Featured Replies

When measuring socket sizes, do you measure from flat to flat edge, or from point to point on them?

Across flats. a 24mm socket will fit a 24mm across flats nut or bolt.

I think the socket to change the oil filter in the vRS is 36mm then...

Oil drains are normally removed using the recessed (usually square) depression in the middle, not the hex head.

But the large hex on the oil filter housing is the one the OP is talking about - i cant remember if it's 32 or 36 AF

EDIT - just checked - it's a 36AF socket for the oil filter cap.

Its not 36 AF (american fine) its 36mm (millimetre)!!

I have just been out with some spanners, and mine is 32mm not 36 (yes I've got big spanners)

If you are interested and have imperial sockets/spanners, then 32mm = 1" 1/4 and 36mm is 1" 7/16.... and if they were nuts, they would be for 3/4 and 7/8 bolts/studs. .... Sorry I'm a Mech Fitter and use them!!

36AF = ACROSS FLATS - we have never mentioned thread size.

Seat and Skoda must be using different caps on the oil filter housing.

My socket is deffinately 36mm AF - measured and written on the side.

there are both types, 32 and 36mm variants, the 1.4tdi engines normally have a 36mm one though

btw what the hell is a 36AF spanner?? haha :giggle: it's a new one on me.. AF sizes are always imperial
