Remapping an Octy TDI 140

Featured Replies

I'd like to remap my TDI 140 (54 plate), but I have a couple of concerns that I haven't really found addressed anywhere. Somehow, it seems a little too good to be true that I can simply plug in a device and up my car from 140 to 175 bhp, for around £450. What about the engine components... wear and tear etc. What about the brakes. This surely is moving my car into VRS territory, and wouldn't a VRS be fitted with many more uprated components than simply a remapped ECU?

I have another two other questions too. Why would my Ambiente (which I purchased last year) come with 17in alloys which never appear to be part of the Ambiente range (according to the cars I've seen on Auto Trader). They very sporty looking, and even the suspension appears to be quite firm and possibly slightly lower than normal. I can't be sure of this though... perhaps it's just the 17s that make it seem that way compared to other Octys which seem to have a big gap between the top of the tyres and the wheel arches. It just seems odd for someone to have specced it like this at some point.

Ambiente with 17" alloys means it should have sports suspension.

Sports suspension factory option included 17" alloy wheels. It sounds like you have this.

Regarding brakes, since I thought the 288mm set up wasn't good enough for a PD140 as a PD140, i'd be tempted to either fit better pads of if you can get carriers and new 312mm discs, you can upgrade to VRS brakes at the front without huge cost as you reuse your callipers.

No remapping is a very effective way of releasing extra power from your car - especially in turbocharged cars. I owned a 530d fairly recently and had that remapped by using Bluefin (Superchips). The effect was amazing, gains of 47 bhp and 88nm of tourque :D those increases as regards the PD140 engine seem perfectly viable to me. All in all, bluefin was the best £445 quid i ever spent on a car!

Thanks, that's interesting to know.

Thanks for this, looks as if some point soon I'll be giving my trust TDi a little something extra then!

Some of the site sponsors are good tuners and I'm sure they'd be happy to give some advice,.

As for wear and tear, that would depend how you drove it,

likewise with the brakes, just because you could accelerate faster,

doesn't necessarily mean you'll be driving faster all the time or needing to brake any harder.

If you've got the service book to hand there's a bar code and lots of 3 letter option codes.

The Sport suspension pack is listed near the end, 2UC I think,

there's a list of all of those codes on here somewhere.

The options could have been fitted by a dealer too. I know my dad's were.

He has a a 56 plate Octavia L&K 140 DSG, which has sports suspension and 17's not part of the standard lot. This was fitted by the dealer at the buyers request.

I'm looking at remapping a 140 bhp Touran soon and I'm liking the Bluefin way of things..

One advantage of remapping the PD140 is that a good map will make the car much smoother to drive as well as providing more umph for overtaking.

I have done several track days on mine with the standard 288mm brakes and had no troubles doing 20 minute sessions and then letting the brakes, and me, cool off for half hour. On the road I have never had a problem with stopping or fade with the standard set up.

I had my old Octy Elegance 140PD remapped by Revo, it also had the sports suspension and pegasus alloys.

It definitely felt better to drive! Sometimes I feel the petrol vRS I replaced it with is slower! that might be just the difference in torque!

I didnt feel it needed the brakes uprating.

I still have the revo select switch I used to change between std and mapped version. It still has the remap on the select switch ;) as I traded it in with standard setting. I must get around to flogging it!

The switch doesn't hold the map I'm sorry to tell you. And if you know who the car went to then you'd better tell them that they have a remap still on their car and to let their insurance company know!

I'm in the same position as you Watford Chap. I also own a 54 plate 2.0 Tdi, which I have owned from new, it now has 50K on the clock, and I am seriously considering a remap. I'm only 40 miles from Mansfield, so am definately erring towards Shark. Not sure whether to go for STS though. I wonder when their next 20% discount day will be! Mine also has the 17" pegasus and lowered suspension, I was under the impression that the pegasus' were fitted as part of the sports suspension. I was lucky mine came with them as standard (Elegance) . I have noticed recently that mine is a little 'jerky' with tiny amounts of throttle, must be going from zero throttle and positive input, wonder if a remap will sort this out?

If Ben from Shark is reading this, maybe he can shed some light....

cheers

Remapped my 140pd Sport and the difference is night and day

do feel the brakes could do with being a bit sharper, BUT the standard ones are good.

As for wear on components etc..................drive it like you stole it all the time then your going to break something. I dont hammer the car (occassional spirited drive ;)), although when being "sensible", i geting a better MPG figure after the car was mapped

Go on, get it mapped..................you'll love it :D

How do u find the ride and handling of ur Octy with 17's ?

Anyone know if the factory fit option of the 17" wheels and sports suspension be fitted by a dealer to a used Octy ?

Thanks

I don't see any reason why a dealer wouldn't fit the sports kit but it might cost a little more than adding it as an extra when the car was new, personally I would look for a used set of vrs springs and dampers, I'm sure there will be plenty around as vrs owners upgrade to non oem setups.

We always try to remove the little annoyances in the standard map and if you notice something when doing the remap then we can try our best to map it out

Throttle response is now much more linear after the Shark Performance STS Remap. Also seems to be no complete fuelcut at low speed, and the jerky roundabout-jumps seems to be all gone

Brilliant News! Thats my one little annoyance at the mo, so would be great to get sorted!

To address your worries on wear & tear the car should be fine if you use an experienced & respected tuner & preferably someone whos reosnably close so its easy to go back if you have any niggles. there are a few on Briskoda if you do a search & if its not someone on here post up the name for peoples views. Beware of cheap maps from back street boys or e-bay as you get what you pay for. My sons friend had a "cheap" map on a Golf GTtdI, goes really well but pours out black smoke & does around 30 mpg, not sure what the long term damage will be !

A good tuner will also know not to push the torque figure to the maximum, it would probably be a tadge quicker but the clutch will be under severe strain & have its life greatly reduced.

Our old Octy 110 was mapped at 8K to 164 bhp. We sold it a couple of weeks ago with 165000 miles on it & still on the original clutch, the only failure on the engine was a blown turbo at around 120K but its a verycommon problem on all Octys of that era

A good remap will give a smoother quicker car & when the right hoof can be resisted better mpg so go & enjoy

Rang Ben at Shark today. I am taking the Octavia over there tomorrow to have the remap carried out. Looking forward to the drive home! Will post my thoughts for you.

Update: Well the remap was carried out today, a very thorough job by Ben. Everything was explained, with a check out and test drive before and after to make sure everything was ok. The remap itself took a couple of hours to carry out. Ben wanted to make sure that all was correct, and it was my map that was modified, not just some generic map thrown on. The idle definately seemed smoother than before. driving through town at slow speeds the car felt just the same (good), but as we increased the throttle the difference was immediately apparent! There is a nice surge that just keeps going and doesnt drop off like it used to. 2nd and 3rd gear are very striking! 4th and 5th are very deceptive now, the speedo needle moves very quickly with the extra torque gained. Speedo definately needs to be watched so as not to get in trouble!! Highly recommended!

My MPG was exactly the same driving home as it was driving to Shark, but the drive home was a little more spirited in places, so quite happy with that. On a longer run at steady speeds i believe an increase is definately possible.

Ben: Where are my £50? :giggle:

Hobbes42: You won't be dissapointed. Looking forward to your first impression on the remap.
