Erm that's your brake disk mate.

They are high carbon steel and do that.

All you can do it paint it.

Thats not the wheel rusting, its the disk.

Alloy wheels cant rust as they have no steel / iron in them. They can corrode however, as mine will be soom if much more lacquer peels off!

Mine are exactly the same, keep meaning to clean them up and stick a bit of paint on there, but keep forgetting, nothing really to worry about, other than as you say, it looks ****e!

I always thought the break disk was the shiny thing that the break pads grip to make you stop ?

What I see is a rusty WHEEL hub ... please link me a diagram so I may learn! :)

Either way, it shouldn't be rusty, I don't want it to be rusty - how do I stop it being rusty ?

I've had this on other cars - best solution is to go and buy yourself a small pot of smooth Hammerite paint and paint the corroded hub area. Whip off any excess rust with a dry piece of abrasive paper first. The formulation of Hammerite makes it stick really well to corroded (but not flaking) rust areas. Black looks good. You will need to take the wheels off first. Do one hub at a time and don't get paint between the hub and the wheel because that could make future wheel removal difficult.

Dont quote me on this, but im pretty sure that is part of the disk rather than the hub.

No that is part of the disk. When you buy the disk, that bit you see rusting is part of it.

It will rust because it's high carbon steel and I've seen it on cars from all price ranges.

What are you using to clean the wheels?

I havn't really had a crack at it yet, hence the request for advice....

I would have thought that there should be some sort of laquer / paint to stop it from rusting in the first place...

Massive sarcasm FAIL. Just take the wheel off and you'll see clearly what it is. You can paint that bit of the disc if you want with some decent high temperature paint.. Its not a problem to have surface rust on it though

its the bell which is part of the disc,

IIRC most people who bother on here use smoothright from hammerite in silver.

Just make sure you don't get any on the pads or braking surfaces.

Thanks for the advice on painting, I'll look into it. Seems a shame to have to paint over rust on your own new car, though, eh ?

haha, not sarcastic - I'm not a mechanic and I always thought a brake disk was the shiny bit which you see through the wheels. IMHO surface rust IS a problem as it looks terrible.

This is a bit of an extreme example, but you can see where the bit that's rusting on yours is on this brake disc. The wheel then mounts flush on the protruding part:

Side question folks; is hammerite capable of dealing with the heat that can build up there on heavy braking?

I thought the rusty part was the hub?? If not, then if I change my rear discs can I get some with a shallower centralising spiggot, as mine seems longer then normal and finding 15mm spacers to fit is proving a nightmare!

yes hammerite smooth can take the heat no problems at all , my brakes take a hammering and ive had no problems at all.

i took my wheels off then used some alloy wheel cleaner first on the hubs then a rub down with a wire brush , then painted them and left to dry overnight.
