Gearbox Problems

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

Not a Skoda but perhaps the same gearbox!!. My car (Ibiza TDI SE 100PD - 52 plate) recently went into stealers for a noise from the gearbox area. A noise that could be describeed as a faulty release bearing. Anyway they've done me proud and changed: Flywheel, gearbox, clutch plate and release bearing. I requested a copy of the job sheet that identifies the parts. However, the noise is still there. Dip the clutch and it goes away!! Additionally, the box graunches when you go into 3rd above 2200rpm and the same coming down the box. I'm not a happy man -Took it back to dealers again this morning and personally tried a 130bhp sport - not a sound at all on a 03 plate albeit 6speed box.

Anybody got any ideas? on the clutch pedal noise?

Knowing Seat Stealers... i would say they were telling porkies about replacing the gearbox. :(

That's what I thougt,ut was shown all the bits on the bench this morning by the Senior Tech. Checked car over definatley new equipment. I've also got the job sheets with all the data tags from the new parts.

The graunching could well be the oil in the box. VAG now supply a thinner oil which helps. The problem lies with a change in the material used to make the syncro rings, they are now much harder to bed in and as the tolerances are tighter the oil cannot flow into the syncros to aid changing. Thinner oil usually sorts this.

Tell you dealer you are not happy (which im sure they know allready) and get them to arrange an appointment with thier area technical manager to inspect it. If its a problem that can be rectified he wil be able to sort it.

But why only 3rd gear? I'm taking the car back on Monday, as they painted the wrong part of the bumper for a warranty job ( cocked the finish of that as well). I've asked to speak to the After Sales Director as the Senior Tech who has transferred from Fiat doesn't know what it is (he replaced all the components). I'll take up your point about the Area Tech Manager then.

Why only third gear? Its probably the third gear syncro thats cusing the problem, either that or the shift cables arent adjusted correctly.

Shift cables?

Gearshift cables, go between your gearbox and the gear lever.
