PD140 Turbo Failure / Upgrade

Featured Replies

My octavia has now gone back to the garage I bought it from due to the screeching coming from the turbo at Idle and under load, The guy in the garage knows I have had modded cars and asked me if the turbo needs replacing would I like then to fit an uprated turbo? Basically they will tell me how much the replacement turbo is and I pay the difference to an uprated model, while this sounds like a wise move I've not managed to find much information on the strengths of the PD140 clutch.

Obviously the clutch should be OK with a Generic remap which will give around 280ftlb but with a larger turbo this figure will be higher. What sort of levels might the standard clutch ope with?

This is only a thought at the moment and I probably wont go for a large turbo as I'm quite happy with the power as it is and with a remap will be more than I would want.

All just thoughts at the moment

A hybrid will probably cost around a grand as opposed to 5 or 600 quid for a recon unit. A stage 1 remap on your standard turbo should give closer to 300ftlb. I was looking into a hybrid from turbo technics during my last turbo failure and I believe they are good for 220bhp !!

I went for a standard recon unit from them ( 2 year warranty ).

They modify the variable vanes slightly which makes them less prone to jamming. I have 313,000kms on my DSG box (remapped from new) and I have had no clutch trouble.

for what its worth mine has been putting out 322lb/ft for 2 years and hasnt given up, but I do feed in the power etc. would say it would be safe at 300lb/ft max.

Sounds like its about the same limits as the pd130 clutch then.

Generic/custom map = standard clutch

Hybrid turbo = uprated clutch

Having said that my old pd130 was running 343ftlb of torque on the standard turbo and needed an uprated clutch.

I thought the limit was 350lb/ft for the box as it's the same box in the PD170.

If you can afford the stronger (doesn't have to be bigger) or hybrid turbo, I think I'd be tempted.

That or a standard one tweaked by turbo techniques.

Do you mean gearbox? i'm sure that will be fine, its the clutch I'm more concerned about. Have had a quick look on Turbo Dynamic's website and I like the idea of a standard turbo from them, all I ever intended todo to this car was to get a generic remap done  but as it looks like this might be an option its worth looking into.

Go for it Matt B)

How does the standard clutch feel at the moment? Its sods law that you will get a remap

on a standard turbo then the clutch will begin slip.

The clutch bite feels very good, and in all honesty I hadn't considered getting a hybrid for this car as it's quite pokey now and I new at some point I would get it mapped and that would be enough poke for me (I never pushed my last car hard and treated it with care as a 50+mpg average showed).

My thinking now is, get a standard turbo fitted, keep the original one as a spare and should the time arrise that I can afford an uprated clutch I could send the turbo off to Turbo Dynamics and have them turn that into a hybrid for me

Sounds like a plam Matt :D Mi 140 sport has been mapped and i've had no issues with the clutch

I'd go with the TT tweaked standard one then mate as this is less likely to fail than the original item and costs less than a new one elsewhere.

It's basically a re manufactured unit. You could then either send your old one back to them and save the money, or just buy the recon unit outright and hold onto your old one so you can ship it off to be worked on to a hybrid later on.

Quick Update,

The dealer have been in touch and said that they get reconned units from their local VW garage who in turn said they send them off direct to Garrett so my original turbo will be going back to garrett.

I'm guessing that what ever issue's the early PD140 turbos had will have now been solved and I'm looking forward to getting my car back.

Heres the screeching noise for those that havent heard it.

Yay, I got my car back with a reconned garrett turbo, oddly its more laggy and seems to come on boost around 2250rpm instead of around 1800rpm on the old turbo, the whole engine sounds much quieter and a little more refined too.

I don't care though, I have my car back, I missid it so much
