1.8 TSI - What fuel?

Featured Replies

I'm due to pick up a new 1.8TSI next month. What fuel is best for this engine? The old 2.0FSI recommended super-unleaded (97/98 RON), but could take standard unleaded (95 RON). There was allways debate about whether it gave any more power or mpg. Any thoughts on the new engine, both manufacturer's recommendation, and what its like in practice?

Just use normal unleaded and it will be fine. I used normal unleaded in my 1.8T VRS with no issues whatsoever so I am sure the 1.8TSI will be fine with normal unleaded too.

It will tell you in the manual. Use whichever one is specified as normal.

I've tried 95ron and 98ron in my new 1.8TSI and kept careful records. Cannot tell any difference whatsoever in mpg or performance. The book with mine says 95ron.

It states in the the fuel filler flap, 91/95 Octane. I wouldn't bother with super unleaded as the only thing that'll get improvement is the payment of duty & VAT to the government.

I did exactly the same - swapped 05 2.0FSi for 58 1.8TSi. You won't half notice the difference, on any fuel!

I have used Tesco 99 super, other brands 97 Super and 95, and agree there is very little difference now, if any.

My 2.0 TSI states standard 95.

Its been mapped and I have tried higher octane but, as all the others so far have stated, I cant tell any difference in performance and/or consumption.

My 1.8Tsi is fine whatever petrol you put in it. I mainly use Tesco or Sainsbury fuel no problems. Tried a tank of Super and it did not really seem to make any difference except maybe a little more peppy.

Good choice of Engine by the way, fantastic unit.

Couldn't tell any difference in performance with super but I reckon it is slightly more economical running on it in standard tune. Now that its been remapped, its running on super to get the full benefit of the remap.

Anything but diesel I would say ;)

In standard tune, this unit will be fine on 95RON. As said, when mapped you get the most benefit from using 98/99 Super, as the map is designed to take advantage of better quality fuel.
