Clunkety clunk... Fabia gearchange issue?

Featured Replies

Not sure if it's my driving style or not but...

Seems that on changing gears on my Fabia that it doesn't seem to engage very quickly when taking my foot off the clutch... Resulting in a clunk/jolt when accelerating just after changing gear.

Any thoughts?

Do we reckon it's my driving style, or is there something that may need to get looked at?

sounds similar to mine.... emoticon-0112-wondering.gif well ive not noticed it being slow to engage gears, just noticed a bit of a clunk , mite just be me tho...

It's strange. I never had any issue with changing using a Fiesta... Now unless their gearbox is more forgiving for my driving style, i'd be inclined to think there might be an issue...

Can't rule out my driving style though as I don't particularly trust many of my mates to drive the car around hahaha!

not sure what it can be, aslong as its not the clutch/dmf etc, thats always the worry emoticon-0114-dull.gif

Mines always clunky slotting in gears especially when cold. Linkage adjustment oil change and new clutch and its still just as clunky. Seems worse on downshifts mainly 1-2-3... Been like it for over a year pretty sure these gearboxes are generally a bit unsmooth

Try the dogbone mount. Fixed the same problem for me. Easy 30 min job. Plenty of threads about this, just search on 'dogbone'. Was the first job I did on mine - very satisfying to do something which was easy and worked.

Had a quick look on the forum pages re: DMF - does the 1.4 mpi have one? I would have thought with it being pre-VW engine/gearbox wise that it probably wouldn't...?

Might explain why driving a relatively new fiesta then going to the 1.4 mpi results in a jolt... Going from a car with a DMF to one without...?

Heh, the DMF might have just been masking some bad gearchange technique lol ;)

i had a similar problem but changed the gearbox oil from 75w90 to 75w80 and it sorted the problem out.very smooth now even when cold.

I'm having clonking issues when changing gears too. Two garages said they couldn't find owt wrong with the dog bone mount (not sure how hard they looked and I gather from searching the forum that tired bushes are hard to spot). I just wondered about having a go at this myself. The technical guide on the forum looks like it is for the Octavia, is the Fabia job much the same? Could anyone help with a part number or where to get one? Is it necessary to replace the whole thing, is it not possible to just change the bushes? Cheers.

Dog bone mount is simple to change, all you need is some spanners and sockets get under the car and have a look!!

Could also be the front console bushes ;)

isnt there a uprated version of the dogbone? sure ive seen it somewhere, anyone got any info, worthwhile, what are the benefits, better feel to the change etc ??

cheers mark

Look on awesome gti's website im sure they sell an uprated complete dogbone on there.

Probably be too vibey for a tdi so id opt with the red diesel powerflex bush and utilise original mount. There is nothing wrong with the original mount its just the bush that goes
