help on what brakes to get please?

Featured Replies

I had some new skoda discs and pads fitted about 12 months ago but was having my car looked over for something else lastweek, and while the wheels were off i noticed the front passenger side disc seemed to have a big chunk taken out the top of the disc(not the shiny surface which the pad touches but the top of it which is usually rusty)

Stopping power has always been crap with OE brakes imo. Perhaps the Skoda brand is rubbish and i need to buy mintex or pagid? i have looked over some older posts and some have taken the 312 disc upgrade but this means changing the calipers.

this could be too expensive an option to goto bigger brakes for me

i dont do track days and ideally would prefer to stick to the standard discs+pad type for the vRS so don't want to rule out these options.

Hi newskoda

I suppose it depends on how big your Chunk is, and why its missing ?

You will find most discs on the edges will rust and the rust will come off(when I do any jobs on my discs, I usually tap the edges with a hammer to

get rid of the rust)

But if you had said the stopping power was crap with after market parts then I would agree, but unless you were unlucky, manufactures parts are usually

very good.

Poss when the new pads and discs were fitted they were not bedded in, or some oil (etc) got on the pad but I have found the VRS brakes to be very good,

but you mention a upgrade, you should not need one for day to day running, but you also say about "handbrake cable" why would you want to upgrade that?

If it was me, I would buy the parts and from the dealer, fit them my self, then I know its done correctly and make sure you bed them in, and I think you will

find they are ok !

Sorry i realised later didn't need the handbrake cable. I did however find this

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-Audi-312mm-front-Brake-calipers-and-carriers-/320526285638?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4aa0dafb46

seems like a good deal but would like to hear more opinions on this or whether I should just stick with OEM 288 setup.

Odd you don't think the oe brakes are up to the job, Pagid are one of the oe suppliers of discs and pads. If you want to go ahead with a 312 conversion have a look at the ads. in Briskoda and www.seatcupra.net and http://uk-mkivs.net/

Ebay is another place for conversion kits as well. If you do the work yourself it shouldn't cost the earth.

Hi

The bit that seems to be missing could it be the part that is cut out to balance the casting?

Are you driving a vRS? If so is it standard? If it is then there should be no need to upgrade to the 312mm. Get mintex discs and pads and you will feel a difference and it won't break the bank.

If it is remapped then maybe think about uprating, but again just go for the standard mintex discs and pads. Unless you have silly power you don't need to spend a fortune. If you do go for Tarox grooved discs and ferodo pads. Don't bother with cheap drilled and grooved discs as there is no need. They are prone to cracking anyway.

Hi, yes its a standard vRS.

Has anyone experience rattle or clicking sounds using Mintex pads? i read an old post on here about it as apparently they have thinner prongs?

thanks

Umm, that is what I was thinking as well.

Also, to the OP, brands like Pagid are what VAG do use on the front pads and Textar on the rear pads, discs will be from somewhere else - but still of the same high quality!

theres actual damage to the top of the disc. If you run your hand over the circumference of the disc it is smooth and round then you hit an area which feels like a "pot hole". When I bought the discs from new they were not like that as it would clearly have been visible but also cos i felt them up loads before getting them fitted. I have seen them since then with the wheels off but the damage must have been recent...last 4-5 months maybe. I have examined brake discs before not just on this car but on my previous and never seen that type of damage before. very odd. i will try to take a pic when the come off.

The actual surface of this disc looks good tho, no grooves in it and it doesnt have a lip on it either.

i will be buying the mintex ones.

That's strange, though the part ground off to remove any unbalance can look quite vicious - though normally flat or slightly concave.

.........I have standard size Zero 60 grooved and dimpled discs with Tarox pads on the front and they are superb and decently price. Excellent stopping power.

I got them off Awesome Sarah
