Clicking sound

Featured Replies

Fabia Y Reg (2000) 1.4.

Any idea why I am getting this strange clicking / ticking sound?

It ticks in sync with the revs, only on low revs. Going past 20k stops the sound.

Could this suggest that something is loose and tightening up with tensioners?

I made a recording of this - please take a look :

Nice post :)

rattling could be a lot of things...

tappets may need set,

water pump is knackered ( does the car over heat?)

big end bearing ? ( thing this may be a knocking sound tbh)

has the car been looked after , when did it have its last service?

Have had the tappets looked at and 'tightened up' (sorry my dad did this) and he said they look ok and not worn.

Car doesn't overheat but has in the past. It is on water pump no 2 and had the radiator replaced in November. Always had a problem with the cooling system on this car so I wouldn't be surprised by this.

Big end bearing? what is this and what can I do to test to see if it is this?

The car would not start yesterday due to 3 of the 4 valves being stuck. Took ages to get them unstuck.

Could this noise be related to this problem?

I would almost certantly say its related to the valves being stuck....

big end bearing is on the crankshaft as far as i am aware, , it would require an overhaul to put right, not an easy job, get yourself a haynes manual and have a look to see whats involved, as im unfamilar with that 1.4 unit but I do know its plagued with problems...

how many miles are on the clock??

to be honest, the engine sounds like a few nuts are being swirled around in a tin bucket, some thing aint right???

Try it with the aux drive belt off for a few seconds, that will rule out alternator and aux tensioner. Sounds like worn top end though. Could even be a broken piston ring.

Car has done 75k miles. I am thinking that if I am lucky, I could get £1k part exchange and go for something else.

Sounds like this is going to be at least a £500 job - for a garage?

Just taken off the altenator and the sound is still there so can't be altenator or aux tensioners.

So this is looking like big end bearing?

I don't think that it is the pison rings.

Is there anything else I can do to try and identify where the sound is coming from?

Mechanics stethoscope works well. Improvised version is a very long screwdriver. You place the pointy end on various parts of the engine, and blunt end to your ear, just make damned sure to keep hair and other body parts away from the moving parts of the engine.

Doesn't sound like big ends t me, more like top end rattle due to camshaft and lifter wear.

FIXED!

We did an oil change with some synthetic 10/40 oil and the tick went away!

As soon as the oil changed the tick got loud on start up and after 30 seconds disappeared all together.

This coupled with a good dose of redex solved the problem.

We are putting this down to the tappets.
