Fabia VRS - 1st & 2nd Gear not engaging - advice wanted

Featured Replies

Alright chaps. Literally got a Fabia VRS yesterday (swapped for my Octi VRS) and this morning I was driving along and changing from 1st to 2nd, as I brought up the clutch nothing happened. Same happens in 1st and 2nd, it will go into gear fine, but nothing's engaging. No nasty noises or anything when it happened.

I can put it into 3rd, reverse or any other gear and drive off. The change into 1st and 2nd seems lighter now, but things still seem to be moving on the selector in the engine. Even with the engine running I can put it into 1st and 2nd without the clutch!

Anyone else experienced this? have searched on here, but nothing much came up.

I had the AA out and they had a listed fault for a screw coming loose under the gearstick, but on checking everything seemed fine.

Going to a mate's garage tomorrow to get it on the ramps, but any ideas appreciated. My mechanic mate suspects either something has come lose with the selector or its the synchro's in the gearbox for 1st and 2nd!

First thing to do is the gearbox cable reset. There is a locking collar on each cable end at the gearbox. You slide these back and twist them which releases the cable tension. There is a small lever below the large selector cam on the gearbox, this is pushed in and twisted through 90 degrees., that locks the gearbox in neutral. You then centre the gearstick, and slide a drill bit through a hole, into another hole in the gearstick housing. You then release the two locking collars on the cables, turn the small lever back to normal position, remove the drill bit and hope it now works.

If it's still snafu, it will be a broken cross pin inside the gearbox selector assembly. This can be replaced with the gearbox is situ.

Cheers MoggyTech...I'll try both of these tomorrow. Are the locking collars accessed from under the car?

Under the airbox / battery :) in engine bay

If I read that right, try not to move off in 3rd too much either - you'll munch the clutch in no time.

Cheers, yes only drove it in 3rd to get it to my mate's garage. Should be getting looked at shortly.

Its really fooked now. In getting it onto the ramps its now jammed somewhere between neutral and reverse - you can just about get it into reverse, but no other gears. The gear stick is really stiff now and off centre.

So I'm going to get it towed to a gearbox specialist in the morning. Is this looking like a new gearbox?

Hopefully it's just the selector that's broken. It can be replaced with the box still in the car. May even just be the cables. 6 speed is usually a very tough box.
