I always thought it was as long as you have the same size on the axle. So you can have different sizes front and back.

legally they have to be the same on one axle, but can be different front to back.. e.g MGTF, lotus elise ect....

As the spare, it could be fitted to either side of the car, as needed. But it has a directional tyre which should only really go on one side of the car. So there's a 50% chance of it running 'backwards', hence the speed limit.

I thought that, but the Conti's don't appear to be directional - they just state which way round that they should be fitted on the rim - ie they have "outside" on the outer wall - can't see why?

Well that's what they were on mine Factory-fitted Conti II Sports, dunno if the other brands were at the same speed rating, but it's most likely it's a highish letter.
