Exploding drinks cans anyone?

Featured Replies

This happened a while ago, but thought I really should mention it on here, as I hadn't seen it mentioned before.

:frosty::dtp:

The 'chilled' drinks can holder in the Fabia where the air conditioning comes through a little hole in the can holder on the drivers side - is this just on the VRS and comfort models?

Anyway - It's not summer anymore, but I still keep cans in there, handy little storage place. I had been parked with the engine running for a good 25 mins in a car park on a cold winters night, cabin heater turned up full then started driving. About 5 mins later I heard the familiar sound you get when you crush a drinks can. I quickly checked that an empty hadn't been hiding under the seat and sneaked to the pedal area. Nothing there...and the sound definitely came from the front driver side. I was driving for a few more mins thinking - where else could that noise come from - then I remembered the 'chilled' can holder. I opened it up and tried to lift out the can but almost burnt my fingers, the metal was that hot. I managed to get it out and one look left my pants in a defecated state :Yikes: - it was a live grenade ready to blow:hbomb::hbomb::hbomb::hbomb: The rim at the top of the can had expanded due to the heat and pressure inside the can. The noise I heard was the top rim popping right out!!! I don't usually chuck litter out my car window but this had to be exception to the rule. Window was down, can got chucked and as I looked in the mirror to see its impact with the ground it just shrapnelled apart with cola going everywhere!!! Pretty impressive actually!

:idea:I have now pushed in the little button on the can storage which blocks off the air going to it:idea:...at least until summer when I might use it again for cooling drinks.

So there you go, don't know if its been mentioned on here before, but with the heater up full and the hot air being blown onto your drinks cans - recipe for near disastrous results!!

Reminds me of a summer job where we stuck a tray of cans into a proper freezer. The next day they were swollen and ready to go. First one opened managed to fire the ring pull at my mate and ended up cutting the side of his neck :D

We also used to microwave eggs and stuff when we were bored, so we were asking for it :)

Hmm, this is indeed interesting...

It would seem that we could also use this container for heating a tin of baked beans, on a longer journey.

Does anyone have a 12v adaptor for a toaster?

Not as bad as what happenned to me. A bottle of Dr Pepper exploded in my boot, which I didnt realise until the following day when the rear seats turned from a nice creamy white colour, to purple

Even now you can see where they were stained...

litterbug! :P ;) Funny though! :D

You could probably use the cigarette lighter to warm up some beans - might take a while and a few recharges. ;)

Tsk - it's on the Elegance models too :P According to the manual the drinks "chiller" pumps in air at the same temperature as that going into the cabin, whereas the chilled glovebox only pumps chilled air in there :D

Chris

erm, the little button in the can compartment - pushes air through to both. So if you had air-con on and set to coldest temp, then both get cold.

Regards,

great use of smilies rossm!

Hicksy :D
