HDMI & DVI-D connection confusion

Featured Replies

I have a new widescreen monitor that has a VGA and a DVI input.

What I want to do is connect the computer to it via DVI and also provide an additional HDMI connection as well for connecting a Flip Ultra-HD camcorder. Doesn't need to be electronically switched or anything fancy as will only be looking at the computer or the Flip output, not both together.

I thought it might be easy to buy some sort of splitter but now there appears to be various DVI connectors (-I, -D etc etc) and male/female HDMI and so on, loads of them on eBay and Amazon

Anyone got a handle on this and point me in the right direction for what cables I need? The monitor has a female (ie holes) DVI socket on it, as does the computer.

Stop press - found a male-male DVI cable in the monitor box. I guess I want this but with a HDMI connector halfway down the lead if you see what I mean.

Ta for any help ;)

If you want to leave it all wired up so you're not faffing about swapping over cables, then you'll need something like This Switch so that you can have 2 DVI cables going into the monitor.

You'll then need something like This Cable so you can plug HDMI straight into the switch.

hope that makes sense

Thanks for that  I like the switch box idea...

No problem.

Don't forget to use Quidco whenever you buy on eBay too B)

What I did was connect VGA cable from computer to television VGA, this only carries video.

So, connected 3.5m/m stereo cable from headphone computer socket to television audio socket.

This completed picture and sound set-up.

This also enables television to become an remote desktop screen, ideal for working on two seperate screens at the same time.

Get a pci hdmi card and add to the pc, thats what i did, now i had HD PC on the TV
