Strange sucking noise while accelerating uphill

Featured Replies

Apologies if this has been answered -I've had a good look round, but can't find anything that quite relates to my problem. There are lots of similars, but not quite what I've got.

On a recent visit to the Highlands of Scotland, I noticed that upon accelerating up steep hills (usually in 2nd and 3rd gears), a kind of feint sucking noise can be heard on my Fabia Mk I. I think it's driver's-side and either under the dash or in the engine bay. The only way I can describe this is that it's similar to the noise my old Honda Civic used to make when I first switched the aircon on - similar to a liquid being drawn through a pipe that has a hole. It's definitely not a whining noise though, hence saying it's not quite the same as the noise described in other posts.

I've had a look under the bonnet, but can't see anything obvious. I've also tried various things, such as making sure the fan/aircon is off. This does only seem to happen up particularly steep hills, so isn't always present.

The car is a basic Fabia with no turbo etc.

Should I be worried? Thanks in advance for any advice.

sorry mate cant help you there but arent noises the most impossible things to try and describe/diagnose on a forum emoticon-0112-wondering.gif .... emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Maybe try getting a video and post it up?

Sounds like the increased induction noise you get when the engine has to work harder. I would check the air filter.

Thanks MoggyTech - I'll give that a go and see what happens.

Cheers.

Check your intetcooler hoses for boost leaks!! The standard side mounted intercooler is under the drivers wheel arch the two boost pipes off it are prone to leaking / blowing!!

Thats also a good call!! I remember i had a green cotton panel filter and it 'dropped' in the airbox as it was a poor fit and created a loud induction note :o
