Is this a good buy?

Featured Replies

Hi All

Been registered on here for a while, but finally decided it's timeto get a new car, Octavia is what I'm thinking...

Hope this is the correct area, apologies if not.

I've seen a Y reg Ambiente TDI for sale at £1300, it has 174k on the clock.

Is this a good price or not? According to Parkers it would be for a usual milage car, but i'm guessing 174k is considered high mileage, though I'm aware that these are capable for 300k+

Thanks for you time

Tom

Hi,

I'm no professional but I can offer a few tips none the less. That does seem high mileage, personally i'd check the condition of the car, inside and out, engine bay, that all electronics work, check for spair wheel and tools. Ask about the history of the car, how many drivers, male or female etc. Also make sure you test drive it. I don't think that sounds too much but look around on the internet, auto trader etc to find a sort of 'average price'.

I haven't had chance to have a look yet, it's about 45 miles away, so I thought I'd see what people thought of the proce before I bothered driving that far.

From what I've been told, one lady owner from new, just passed an MOT, generally good condition throughout, although scratch on driver side back door and little wear on the driver seat edge.

Thanks

Tom

I would say that is a little bit over priced!

I have just sold my 52reg Octy L&K which had all the heated leather, air con, cruise control and only had 114k on for £1900!

Keep looking round, you will get a lower mileage one and maybe a better spec for around that price!

Thanks for youre quick reply.

Although high milage, I suspect that having only 1 owner and especially a lady owner, the car is in pretty good nick. Still have a look around on ebay and auto trader, just in case something closer pops up in better nick. My guess is that your buying from a garage?

I went all the way to Sidcup to pick up a vRS not even two weeks ago and within a week I had the MAF sensor and then the gearbox go. If any thing else goes wrong, I have to drive back there to get anything sorted rather than taking it to my local Skoda dealer because it's under the garage's warrenty. So if buying from a garage, I recommend looking some where more local.

Nope, it not a garage, it's on ebay as a classified.

Problem is there is very little up here in Scotland and prices are generally a little cheaper and more available in England. This one is 45 miles from the folks, the old boy has a 1.8 SLXi, so was thinking of getting him to nip over and have a butchers.

I see, it proabably is a good idea to get the old man to have a looksy, they generally have more of an idea of what to look for as well. Assuming you don't have much car knowledge (I don't :D)

Seems expensive for the milage to me, but then as has been said, only 1 owner may be an advantage.

There may also be a lot of room for manouver if examples of similar priced better spec/lower milage are shown?

I'm not completely green, but he has a few more years than me! Also having his own, though granted different model, he'd have some idea what it should feel like etc.

It's actually on for £1295 or best offer, but has no tax, was thinking of offering £1200 or £1295 if she taxes for a year, it's a May reg car, so falls into the £110 a year tax bracket.

Ooh, got a 6 CD changer too - just what I need! He he.

Again, aside from the mileage, it seems like a good buy, taking into consideration that there isn't much available in your area. Your best bet is to bargain of course. Try for a little lower price and for a years tax or just a lower price as you said you would. I think your better off going to see the car for yourself personally but I guess your old man can give you a rough idea of how the car is.

Seeing it myself would be nice, but 7 hour car journey each way, or the same by train is a problem.

As an idea, just looked on AutoTrader, there is one diesel Skoda for under 2000 within 100 miles of me, and that's and SDI.

Tom

If it were me, I'd be starting around £850, or as low as I could whilst still keeping a straight face.......

And how far would you go?

Tom

1 Lady owner (if true) would equal sticky VNT mechanism on the Turbo unless she regularly boots it or replaces the turbo.

I'd say avoid if it was my money.

Thanks for youre quick reply.

Will it really take 7 hours to do a 90 mile round trip?

Its 90 miles round trip from the Folks, 800+ from me!

Oh.. well, that's a long way to go for a car that people on here think is over priced. If your sure about it, it probably is a good idea to get the old man to have a look for you.

Oh well, think this can be kicked into touch, further details are...

last service was 150k

timing belt at 140k

Seeing as current mileage is 174k, I'm guessing that's not far off another belt due, about £300 I'd guess, and I seem to recall that diesels need regular oil changes, so if it hasn't been done since 150k...?

Last july I scrappaged my SLX TDi Estate with 168000m on it. 1999 S reg fair condition but a few faults. if I was selling it privately I would have expected about £800. So I would think your Ambient too expensive.

Cam belts are due every 80K.

So if it's been done at 140K it should last a while.

Is the history all Skoda?

My wife had an X-Reg Ambient TDi (it was her company car at the time) and it didn't make it to 80K... turbo power became non-existant. The history was full but not Skoda.

She got a 53 plate L&K TDi as a replacement. This time she made sure it had virtually all the history at Skoda. It had about 170K on the clock when she sold it earlier this year.... to a taxi driver as he reckoned he could get about another 40-50K out of it!!

I have a 51 plate Elegance TDi with over 180K on the clock and a ful Skoda history (I bought it with 130K on the clock from the Skoda dealer that had sold & fully serviced it)... no major problems since.

I'm the 2nd owner.

I reckon it'll make it beyond 200K.

Personally I'd go for the Elegance (or L&K) over the Ambient any time, you get full climate control, centre armrest, sunroof, etc. etc..

OK

Having been dissuaded from this vehicle, I'm finding not much to choose from on eBay or AutoTrader, are these the only places you folk recommend, or is there somewhere else I should be looking too?

Thanks

Tom
