NAS box users?!?

Featured Replies

Do we have any users on board?

Any hints on what NOT to go for

This will be a basic storange only with a possible raid config (backup and media)

Looking for about 1tb with possible expansion

I have an Infrant/Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ which is about 3 years old now. 4 disks (750gb), raid 5. Does everything I need - media streaming, ftp, https, BT client (is a bit pants), ssh, GB ethernet. Additional USB ports for printer / UPS / USB hdd.

Would I buy another one: yes, although I guess the market has moved on.

If it's just for basic storage then I guess any of the offerings from the main manufacturers would do?

ICY BOX, Seagate Central Axis, Iomega Home media, Buffalo Terastation etc ....all to be had pretty cheaply.

I use a Buffalo Linkstation Live to stream my media and its worked flawlessly for me.

I also acquired a Maxtor/Seagate Central Axis 500gb, which I only use for photo backup, but has also never let me down.

Guess it comes down to budget / needs.

I have an LG 2B1DD2 with Bluray backup. It has 2Tb, which I've set up as RAID 0. Lots of other features, print server, Itunes server, media server. Nice and easy to configure and use. The hardware and software are pretty good, the manual useless.

I Have a Lacie Ethernet Disk Mini 500 Gb its ****,

Have a look at the Qnap TS219 a friend has one has some great features and is next on my list when i get a few ££ together, also has a great feature if you have an IP camera on your house etc. it can store direct to the qnap

I bought a uATX mobo and built up a NAS box which is running XP. Overkill maybe, but still relatively power efficient (around 20W), and of course offers support for just about any kind of protocol I'd want, and has enough grunt to do realtime transcoding of HD material for playing back on the PS3 or other DLNA clients.

Cost: less than £100 for the mobo, cpu, Gig-e NIC, graphics, super efficient DC PSU. Mobo has 4 SATA ports IIRC so easy to build up / expand RAID. Just add HDDs :)

How about a nettop/Intel Atom based system with something like http://freenas.org/ installed. Power efficient, cheaper than the higher end NAS boxes, and more flexible with more features etc.
