Best way to drive a vRS?

Featured Replies

On doing a motorway run I made a note of the gear to speed-rpm ratio to check whether it is the same for everyone else? I just wondered when do people change up to 6th gear and what is the best way to drive the vRS in terms of economy? I usually change to 6th at 65mph and this is about 2000rpm, but now thinking about it, isn't that too low? and does it not put more strain on the engine because it is not turning over quickly enough? Would it also mean if I change up at around 2000-2500rpm, the turbo is constantly going to be uneccessarily on boost which means more fuel+air being thrown in and could mean a damaged turbo in the long term?

60mph 4th 2700rpm

80mph 4th 3500

70mph 5th 2500rpm

75mph 5th 2700

95mph 6th 3000rpm

80mph 6th2500

everyone will be slightly different i'd imagine...dont see you doing much wrong...and you'll never damaged the turbo doing 2500 rpm constantly...

No problem whatsoever in 6th at 2k rpm. If you went as low as 1500rpm, it really doesn't like that.

I normally keep it at 1500RPM or above, unless im going down a hill in which i'll get to a higher gear and let gravity take me down the hill....

I try to keep revs between 1500-2.3krpm when taking it easy

I find cruising at a constant speed at 1500rpm to be fine, but always change down to accelerate as it doesn't pick up well from 1500rpm.

Yeah. It's bad for the DMF too

i remember reading that before the turbo kicks in it does something to the exhaust gases to make driving more eco, so having it just under 2k revs should be best in every gear?

is this true or have i made myself look like a mug?!

Who gives a dam about economy, get that right foot down boys and girls.

If I want economy I'll buy a tandem bicycle, and let my spouse do the peddling. LOL

I often go from 4th to 6th or 3rd to 5th then 6th fuel eco at its best

I also believe learning to look ahead, antisipate and smooth driving is best for eco driving.. everything else falls into place..

Spot on

In general most engines work at their best (and are most usable) between where maximum power and maximum torque is produced.

Obviously this differs for varying engines but the good thing about the vRS is that you can drive it economically one moment and then surprise the hell out of people by disappearing into the distance!

Just enjoy the car but be mindful of any mis-treatment/low speed - high gear/labouring of an engine will have a detrimental effect on it. Anticipation, looking as far ahead as possible and learning 'road/acceleration sense' is a benefit in all types of driving.

Good advice!

:wonder:

The owners handbook tells you to change gear at 2000 revs.

I tend to sit on motor way at 80 (safest speed to do on the motorway) and get bout 50 mpg so happy with that, sod sitting at 65-70.

if you are at a constant speed just cruising doing 55 in 6th is fine but if you want to accelerate you will need to change down a gear or you will be putting a load on before the turbo kicks in, anything between 1500 and 2000 rpm is good for cruising but not overtaking and over 2000rpm for when you want to overtake and other things.
