Xbox 360 Slim

Featured Replies

Anyone been watching all the E3 announcements with regards to the new 360 slim?

Its the first time i've actually wanted RROD, so i can justify buying a new 360....

Slim

still looks as fat as ever and as for the power supply its still as big a power satation

Noticed you can pull the hard drive out but your still at the mercy of microsoft on what hard drive you can fit i.e. they control the price, i never noticed the sound of the fans before maybe because the volume was up on the tv!

Nah im glad i didnt buy another xbox as i dont trust microsoft with their new and improved "prone to fail" xboxs - more games but just as expensive as a ps3 when loaded up.

I wonder what steps they have taken to avoid them being hacked?!

Ill be keeping my home-made 250 elite.. (until i get banned probably lol)

Well, Microsoft have been designing this console for a year or two apparently, so lets hope RROD is finally put to bed.

If the 360 is now quiet, and the Wifi works well, then thats a huge bonus in my eyes.

Not that noise bothers me, i have surround sound headphones.....but the missus moans she needs to turn the TV up :)

My 3 1/2 yr old 360 is just on it's way out as it needs a few minutes to warm up before it reads discs so i was going to use part of my bonus next month to get a new Elite console to replace it....... Think i might have to wait a little while longer now. ;)

Cheers

Dave.

Is the RROD still a problem? i havent had a 360 in a few years after mine died and i refused to buy another knowing it would die again hence the ps3. The last i heard was that they had sorted it out but as i dont use the 360 forums anymore are they still dying?

They were indeed still dying. Every update made the problem less common, but not got rid of it.

Lets hope Microsoft worked out a way to make it go away completely.

well this new design is completely new... teh cpu and gpu are both on the same chip now also 45nm and from the looks of the case the fan is now directly over the cpu.

ok, if the RROD is still happening WHY do people still buy it? I know there's lots more games than the ps3 etc I mean if Skoda made a car that destroyed its engine and we had to buy another car and we knew that was going to happen again then we would go mental so then why do people put up with it from Microsoft?

Because a car is far more expensive and generally a necessity whereas a console is comparatively cheap and it's for entertainment, not something you need to rely on. Although the RROD can still occasionally occur it's no longer a design flaw which is likely to happen to all 360's plus it's not something the the PS3 is immune from either as it can suffer similar problems with the BGA contacts breaking on the processor or graphics card leading to the so called Yellow Light of Death. Thankfully despite being my most used console, both my launch Premium and launch Elite have never suffered any problems although neither have any of my PS3's...may be because it's a bit colder up here.

I'm quite tempted by this new model mainly because of the better drive capacity, quieter and lower power although I'm disappointed they haven't changed to a user upgradeable hard drive and more importantly it's still a clumsy external power supply.

I am on my second 360, my launch day one expired after about 18 months and this one has been fine ever since.

As long as the console is less than 3 years old and has the RROD then MS will repair or replace it for free.

The reason I guess people keep buying them, is they are cheap compared to the PS3. Should my 360 break, I can walk into a shop and get another for just over £100, slap the HDD from my current console on the side of the new one and switch on. Unlike a PS3 which would need an outlay of at least £250 to get going again, as these also fail as several friends have found out to their cost.

The current consoles based on the jasper chipset have now elliminated the RROD problem, I am not aware of any colleagues or friends with one of the later consoles who have had issues.

When the new console is released, I'll most likely go out and buy one because I like the idea of having 250GB of space, even though I still have loads of spare disk space on my current 120GB HDD.

The thing that got me with the free repair i was offered was its some one elses that been repaired not yours that gets returned back so if mine was less than 12 months i could possibly get a 2 year old m/c from a smokers household or someone who hasnt looked after their console - which i thought was wrong. You also say about the price outlay but i found that you need a hard drive fotr the 360 yeah i tried without it at the start but you cant save games and then its the the rip off subscription to go online. I recently changed my hdd to 500gb for £50 - my choice not sonys.

I think you answered my question on why do people keep going back to the 360 with "Should my 360 break, I can walk into a shop and get another for just over £100" - I just refused to go down the line of buying another one knowing it will break again.

I just hope they dont use crap manufacturing again and screw the loyal fanbase they have with the 360 which can be a very good product if done right.

Not sure about everyone else, but i've always been about the games. Im far more interested in having the best (personal opinion obviously) games platform, rather than the most reliable games platform.

I've had hundreds maybe thousands of hours of play out of a £300 console (repaired free a couple of times). Even if i'd have had to buy a couple, it would still have been exceptional value for money.

From my experience the ps3 has had worse reliability for me . im on my 3rd ps3 since launch and only on my 2nd 360 since it was launched , also on the comment about getting a refurb unit back from MS thats what Sony offer too which is why when this one does die it will not be getting replaced or repaired as Sony charges a rediculous amount for repair . But its all about the games and at the moment i have 115 xbox 360 games and 25 ps3 games

I like the look of the new one, mine is on the 3 reds now and has been for a while but not had time to sort it.

It was fine then just froz, when I reset it it had the 1 light on then rest again to find 3. got it working again but it kept on crashing in game. and now it only flashes red. I am hoping it gets fixed as I like the games for it but Ive never really played it mush in the 2.5 yr ive had it. my sisterplayed on it more in the week she came to visit lol than Ive ever played it.

I would like the new one but tbh I wouldnt trust MS. I wont be buying a new one till Ive seen what ppl think of it. Ill stick to the Wii and PS3 slim(my xbox is the one with the HDMI port on Premium)

billy

have to say I dont think the ps3 is anymore reliable than the xbox. Both me and my brother have gone through 2 since lanch!!

My elite so far has been fine, tempted to go for the new one when I have funds but to be fair its no better than an elite.

RROD has definitely been eliminated from the 360 slim.

They're removed the red LEDs.

:S

Yep, it's the RDoD instead...

The trick with the Playstation products is to pay a premium for a launch model. They're always over engineered and last for years. I had the Ps2 at launch and the PS3 and never had a problem. Oh, except for a new HDD when I unplugged it halfway through booting up!

I wouldn't agree with that - the launch PS2's had garbage optical drives, when I worked for a company that used them I was sending back three a week on average to get the optical drives replaced. Similarly the launch PS3's are the least reliable of the PS3's as they have the hottest and most power hungry version of the Cell processor at 90nm whereas the later versions had a smaller more power efficient version and a smaller one again for the Slim.

I'm not saying all launch models fail but after working with decent numbers of them, if I was to choose one for reliability it would be a later model.

John

Can't wait for the new XBox to come out, should mean I can pick up an 'old shape' arcade to replace my broken 360 nice and cheap :)
