Clutch release causes a knock

Featured Replies

Hi,

Been noticing over the last few weeks when i'm in first gear and bringing the clutch up to find the bite, there's a slight knocking sound. It isn't that loud and it knocks 2 or three times. Usually as i'm setting off from traffic lights or any other standing position. Could it be the dogbone mount?

I got access to the AR drop links my putting my wheels on full lock then spraying PTFE onto the bolts and rubber. Hasnt made a difference

Also another funny noise i'm hearing seems to be related to the hand brake.

When I pull the hand brake up there's a creak from the back of the car. I have also tried keeping the hand brake on, engine turning over and then rotating the steering wheel from full lock to full lock and just as it locks, the creak can be heard again from around the back of the car.

Any ideas what this could be?

Noise one could be dogbone mount or engine mountings, Noise two is normal, as you turn steering the suspension geometry alters causing the rear brakes to 'moan'. Goes away briefly when new pads and discs fitted to rear.

thanks i've ordered the dogmount bush. May as well get it replaced. If it isn't that will at least narrow down things.

For info to others the part number is 6Q0 199 851 AT (it used to be "n" at the end...thats an old number)

The bolts are N10204804(2no) and N90983001 (1no i think)

***update***

today got two mechanics to test drive my car and the noise did make an audible appearance. We all checked under the car, tightened up bolts, checked the caliper holders and wheel nuts were tight. Then fitted a new dog mount bush and new drop links.

The noise is still there :'(

What i did find on the way home when i had the window down (passenger side) i could hear a whistling sound at low speed...it seemed to be rotating. I hadnt heard this before because i usually have the AC on and windows up.

I dont know if the whistling sound is related to the knocking sound mentioned earlier ?

i am aware the whistle could be a wheel bearing? or perhaps a mintex dodgey brake pad? lol.

coincidently all these odd noises seem to have started since i had fitted new mintex discs and pads a few weeks ago.

lastnight I lubed up my drivers seat bolts as it was a bit creaky and it helped a lot. I thought this may have been the noise but wasn't. I checked passenger side seat and that is fine.

Only thing i can think of now as mentioned before could be the other engine mount located under battery tray? do these fail? how easy is it to change?

The knocking could well be the gearbox side engine mount (its under the battery tray/air box). I had to have both the dogbone and gearbox side mount replaced on mine before mine stopped knocking :( There was a bulletin from skoda about lubing it up with silicone grease to stop the knocking. It worked for some, but not for me.

I had knocking when putting power on/off, dropping the clutch etc. anything that made the engine wobble about a bit. Even some rough roads caused it.

Leaving the car in gear, handbrake off... then pushing the car there was excessive engine movement, couldn't of been good for things!

i have same problem now, 1st gear as im setting off i hear 2 or 3 knocks, sounds like a mounting, had car up on ramp today and cant see or find anything wrong with it, i was thinkin it cud be the dogbone bush, but after reading this not sure now, anyone esle had this problem and fixed it?

I have this problem too, progressively getting worse/louder over the past few months. Basically a knocking noise/clunk when changing gears (more especially the lower gears) and now when dabbing the throttle when in motion at slow speeds. No clonking noise when dabbing the throttle when stationary (in neutral with the brakes on) though. I've had the dog bone mount replaced already but this didn't fix it and I had the garage give the suspension a good check over but they didn't spot anything wrong. The front and rear brake discs and pads, brake fluid and gearbox oil are all new (noise before and after these things were changed). The console bushes and antirollbar/droplinks were replaced a couple of years ago so I'd hope they'd all be ok. From inside the car the noise seems to come from the clutch area or steering rack area perhaps. Any thoughts on what is at fault, anything else I can do to diagnose things and as the noise is getting worse whether this means something is likely to fall off?

Sounds just like mine tag1_uk, i'd put money on the gearbox side mount (not the dogbone one, the one under the battery/air box), is a p*ss poor design tbh

Will only do it in gear when moving, as otherwise the engine has nothing to push against, the torque these engines generate are fun, but not for rubber mounts!

Just replaced dogbone mount today as the knocking on my vRS had rapidly become pretty awful. Mainly when the clutch pedal was depressed, from 1st>2nd and 2nd>3rd, but could be heard at other times as well...

As described above the part number is now 6Q0199851AT (not N) and the bushing on the new one does seem to have been reinforced. For £28.54 inc VAT it's definitely worth a go. The old one looked perfectly ok when it was removed by the way, although you could see that there had been more contact on one particular area than the rest.

To my surprise it's made a big difference to the way the car drives as much as it has the sound but the knocking is still there to some extent. Probably not that bad but I'm tuned into it now.

What's the next most likely suspect - gearbox side engine mount? (Anyone got a part number?) It would be asking too much if that was as cheap and easy to replace as the dogbone mount I suppose....?

Thanks for all the input but I am very worried if I don't it fixed soon the engine or gearbox is going to just...FALL OUT?? can this happen? :( :S

enginemount.jpg

thats the engine side mount, i think the problem one is the gearbox side one, which looks like number 9? cant see pic very good

Thanks for the info guys. Newskoda, where are you getting the screen grab from - looks really useful? If it is number 9 we're looking for, any chance of another pic with the part number(s) for that?

Glad it's not number 14, looks around £150 for the part.

I've searched and read elsewhere that there is a service bulletin for greasing up the gearbox side mount but can't find details... is there a copy of the bulletin knocking (eek) around anywhere or better still a guide with pics on what/where the heck to grease?!

Yep as boro said its not 14, its the collection of stuff around 9 I think lol

I doubt anything will fall out as it'll just be the rubber being shot making metal hit metal, it just sounds and feels awful.

I remember when mine was changed everything felt so much tighter afterwards when putting the power down

number 9 is part number 6Q0 199 555 K and it is described as "left rear" gearbox mounting. I think it costs about £60.

I got these off my version of ETKA

see below..sorry best I can do as a screen grab. The original picture is not that clear.

How easy is this left gear box mounting to do? I did have a brief look at mine and it'd look like the battery would have to come out. Would one have to support the engine in a harness during the replacement? Is it more a garage job rather than DIY?

Definitely battery out, tray out... probably air box too as its in the way.

Engine would definitely need supporting. Sure i saw a guide about supporting from underneath when I was looking but not sure.

Be a lot easier at a garage, i definitely wasn't about to try meself

By the way as i mentioned earlier, there was a skoda bulletin/advisory thing about lubing the mount with silicone grease to stop the knocking. It may be worth trying this first as the grease is about £5 from maplins and removing the battery and tray isn't that hard! It worked for a few other members (remember chrispy or something having a lot of luck with this!) but did b*gger all for me

thank you

i'll take mine to a garage.I hope the lube helps. Don't really want to have to spend £60 on the mount.

Mine's going to the local garage as well - the noise is so pronounced I think I'm just going to bite the bullet and try a new mount.

6Q0199555BA for my vRS, £73.52 inc new bolts and VAT. It's good to hear that others have had the same thing and (I assume) cured it, just hope this does the trick.

(as an aside, I was wrong about the cost of the other mount - the engine side one - can't remember the exact cost but it's about £85 + VAT)

Guys, Ive been doing my nut in over this mount. Had everything out loads of times and lubed it up several times. It does work, but then the problem comes back. In my case probably because I'm running considerably more power, but its easy enough to do yourself. I'm ordering a new one tomorrow, there are cheaper used ones on ebay click here but why run the risk of this one being shot too for the sake of 20 pounds more.

Will report back

good luck mate, I know how annoying this noise can be :(

Anyone thinking of buying a Skoda DONT!! My new (Feb2010) fabia had a clutch failure This is not covered under warranty and Skoda say"customer missuse" after only 10000 miles My Mitsubishi charisma has done 100000 miles on the original clutch. a new clutch has cost me £630

So read this and make your own minds up.

I spoke to my local skoda dealer today and ordered up 6Q0199555BA. Not sure why the part number from ETKA is different, but anyway hope to collect it friday
