Unfortunately, for the third time in 2 years I return to my Superb 170CR elegance after a week without use to find the battery flat - does anybody have any suggestions ?

Modern cars have so much running in the background all the time so after a week or so without use and the battery has no juice left.

I have a battery conditioner fitted to all my cars, it cycles the battery as if it were in regular use on the car. You just connect up the clips so that all you need do is plug in the conditioner which is plugged into the mains.

This is the model I have http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/products/products/59293/battery_conditioners.html

I've had this on my car for nearly 10 years now and never had a problem, they are weather proof so with the car parked on the drive with the front to the garage, the conditioner sits underneath the car and is plugged into the socket other side of the garage door.

Hope this helps.

Many Thanks. The conditioner sounds like a great idea - unfortunately my problems generally occur at airports where the car has been siting for a week. I think I'll have to resort to a Booster pack in the boot for when I get back. Poor design.

You can also get solar powerd chargers that sit on the dash and plug into the cigarett lighter to keep the battery topped up which might me more helpful for when the car is left at an airport.

That's odd and not - IME - at all normal. I've left my Superb for 15, 18 and 21-day periods without any problem whatsoever.

You've got an electrical "leak" somewhere, but good luck in finding it! Is there any non-OEM stuff added to the car? Extra electrical take-off points? .mp3 player left connected? Other than that, the battery must be dud.

Never had any battery problems with any of my Skodas. I have had to leave my vehicle on more than one occassion for 6 to 8 weeks, started first turn of the key. There is always a slight drain by the security system, no way this will run down a fully charged battery in a week, either the battery is failing, or you have an unusual power drain.

Have the vehicle checked by a motor vehicle electrician, not someone who will only use vagcom. If you do have to change your battery get the largest amp hour capacity that will fit in the car. This will not cause any problems, in fact it will save the alternator a lot of work and assist the starter motor.

Battery life with a few of my other vehicles.. Austin A40 Devon, 10 years. Ford Orion, 14 years..Skoda Superb Elegance Mk I, 6 years..Present Mk II, 2 years new Estate expected early December.

My superb is sometimes left for 2 weeks at a time, and everytime so far the car has always had power and started fine.

Typical cause in the superb is likely to be the columbus headunit not shutting down properly either due to a canbus issue or faulty hardware.

One other thing to consider is that the power sockets are not switched and are permanently live.

Do you have leave a phone charger or anything with an led warning light plugged in whilst leaving the car for a week or so.

Although the current drain is very small, it will be enough to flatten the battery over a week if left.

Thanks for all the suggestions and the news that this is not a typical problem. No phone chargers etc plugged into the car while away. The only non manufacturer addition if a Thule towbar kit. Given the level of technology involved with the car is it possible to use the diagnostics to pinpoint electrical draw ? Otherwise the solar powered battery charger seems like a good idea (for the fwe minutes of Sun we get each day in Cork !)

There is a BCM update for some models to stop battery drain issues, worth popping it in to your local dealer and getting them to check.

According to all my autosparks literature with the ignition and everything off, the current drawn from the battery should be no more than 100mA, this is easy to check if you have acccess to a multi meter.

When the battery on my Cosworth kept dying I tested the current draw as follows:

1) Disconnet the positive lead from the battery

2) Conect the positive lead of the multimeter to the positive battery terminal.

3) Then the negative lead of the multimeter to the positive battery cable that was removed and measure the current draw.

The can bus network can take upwards of 30 mins to go into rest state fully, but 0.1 amps, maybe 0.2 at a push is acceptable.

Thanks again for the suggestions. I'll get the Multi Meter on the job and get back with the current reading. Can I do any harm by disconnecting the battery ?

No, but do be aware that if you leave it off for a period longer that it would take to actually change the battery, you're likely to have to go to the dealer for the Columbus code to make the head unit work again.

I've asked previously on here about what the time period actually is, but I didn't get a definitive answer. You shouldn't have a problem AFAICT, but don't go for a cuppa between disconnecting and re-connecting! :)
